My 1st job was at McCormicks meat market (14). At 16, I went to work for Sun Mart on 4th & Mulberry. I was born and raised 2 doors down from the Modern Dairy, used to go to Wintermutes on 3rd & Mulberry or Leu's (sp?) on Sycamore and 3rd/4th. Grandmother lived right across from Central (?) which was the College previous to that, between 5th & 6h. on Sycamore, where the high rise is now. You remember the bicycle shop on Sycamore, between 4th & 5th streets on the alley? Cohns and Nietzels soda jerk counters? That there was at least 1 bar on every street in downtown Muscatine, Several had 2or 3 in every block. The Grand Hotel? How about the European on 4th & Cedar? |

More stuff: Brie's on 6th & Mulberry (19 cents a gallon). Pack of cigarettes at Dick's Apco was 25 cents out of the machine. Henri's Hambergers, and, of course Mr. Quick & the A&W rootbeer stand ( I still have mugs from the, and the Dog & Suds. I can't forget the Rock-a-bye Inn (fantastic pork sandwiches, or the eatery next to Heinz Field (can't remember the name of it right this second). God, it's a bear to get old, and, remember that kind of crap, isn't it? But, those WERE the days my friend! |
