Our nation was founded on a few principles. The primary being "liberty".
lib·er·tynoun \?ˆli-b?™r-t?“\ plurallib·er·ties
Definition of LIBERTY1: the quality or state of being free: a: the power to do as one pleases b: freedom from physical restraint c: freedom from arbitrary or despotic control d: the positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges e: the power of choice
From a Dedication to a Tree of Liberty, Providence, Rhode Island (during the time of the American Revolution):
"We do therefore.....dedicate and solemnly devote this tree to b e a Tree of Liberty. May all our councils and deliberations under its branches be guided by wisdom and directed to the support and maintenance of that liberty which our renowned forefathers sought out and found under trees and in the wilderness."

I think you're right that it wasn't really capitalism yet.

Vietnam currently has a central controlled (communist) government and a market controlled (capitalist) economy.
The strictest communist nations are the least prosperous.
The more capitalist countries are the most prosperous.
