We don't have to make friends with radical muslims.

We don't need to make enemies of the non-radical muslims either.   And that seems to be what you advocate.

We need to instill respect and a certain amount of fear when dealing with that culture.

If you want respect, you take care not to burn their Holy Books.

These "people" are always "mad" about something.  And "mad" in every sense of the word.  In the words of Rosanna Anna Danna: "It's always something" with them.  They don't need an excuse; they will manufacture one when they have to.

If you think diplomacy will win the hearts and minds of radical muslims you are a fool.

Disrespect of their culture will just make it worse and make it last longer.   Maybe you could go to Ramallah with the Sister Cities group and learn there are friendly Muslims.   But knowing you, you'd probably start an uprising.

Just like any medeavil culture, they respect strength.

Give us some historical cases where strength, that is continued subjucation, gained respect.   It didn't work in Ireland, India,

South Africa, or the Confederate States of America and it's not working in Palestine to name a few.

It's an historical fact.  In the obumbler they see weakness.   His apology only made matters worse.

Wrong, wrong and wrong.

And, hiroad, what would be your advice for the Chinese in Tibet?   Be strong?   Make the Tibetans show you some respect?   If you believe those, you're on the other side from most people in the world outside of China.

You don't have to "subjugate" people to get their respect.  All you have to do is convince them that there would be unacceptable consequences for violence against us or our allies.  Teach them that they can live like normal people and get along fine with us.  But if they want to live like barbarians and animals, they will pay a price they will not wish to pay.

By the way, I'm talking about a medieval society and culture, not Ireland.

It isn't really relevant, but just so you know about how the "troubles" came to an end in Northern Ireland, and about the brits still in Ireland:

"Although having permanent garrisons there, the British Army was initially deployed in a peacekeeping role – codenamed "Operation Banner" – in Northern Ireland in the wake of Unionist attacks on Nationalist communities in Derry[91] and Belfast[92] and to prevent further Loyalist attacks on Catholic communities, under Operation Banner between 1969 and 2007 in support of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and its successor, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).[93] There has been a steady reduction in the number of troops deployed in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998.[94] In 2005, after the Provisional Irish Republican Army announced an end to its armed conflict in Northern Ireland, the British Army dismantled posts and withdrew many troops, and restored troop levels to that of a peace-time garrison.[95]

Operation Banner ended at midnight on 31 July 2007, bringing to an end some 38 years of continuous deployment, making it the longest in the British Army's history.[96] An internal British Army document released in 2007 stated that the British Army had failed to defeat the IRA but had made it impossible for them to win through the use of violence. Operation Helvetic replaced Operation Banner in 2007 maintaining fewer servicemen in a much more benign environment.[96][97] From 1971 to 1997 a total of 763 British Military personnel were killed during the troubles.[98] The British Armed Forces killed over 300 people.[99] A total of 303 RUC officers were killed in the same time period. In March 2009, two soldiers and a Police Officer were killed in separate dissident republican attacks in Northern Ireland.[100]
