What's right

Should Muscatine have an alternative High School, or has our method of teaching simply failed?

Failed who? Many students have flourished in the Muscatine educational system, so we should throw out the whole thing because  of some? It does not appear to be an all or nothing decision.

Why do we have anywhere between 15 or 20 valedictorians each year when 50 years ago we had just one or maybe two?  Is it because today's student is so much smarter?  No, it's because we have so dumbed down our schools that any idiot can graduate just by showing up and warming a chair..  I often wonder if today's top achievers could even handle the basic courses of 50 years ago.

Tha alternative high school is intended to provide a place to put the "bad apples".  Not long ago, these trouble maker's behavior wasn't tolerated,  they were expelled and considered dropouts and then there were those who did us the favor of expelling themselves by dropping out volunterely.  Unfortunately, we no longer have local control over such matters.  The feds and state will crack down on school districts by withholding funds if dropout rates are too high so, every attempt is made to keep kids in school who don't want to be there, regardless of the disruption they cause.  This is why our school district wants an alternative school, and that in turn explains why they want to increase the property tax levy!  Now you know the rest of the story.

If that's anything like an alternate life style, forget it. Fix what we have, don't just talk about fixing it. Find out what worked in the past, then go back to it. Just because something is from the past does not mean it's no good anymore.

Nedl is right.

Old school and stay with it. You take any of the text books we use to have from oh say, 1880 to 1950 and just see if half the class can get a passing score from either. Most cannot. We use to have word problems and most did just fine----- and by God they didn't have Texas instruments to aid them either. Today the little dried out sponges cannot absorb any of it. We had a closer connection to each student and the parents back then. We had more schools and fewer head count per class. We were a nation and states of minds  that grew like none other. Now they are larger and larger crowded rooms with new age thinking with fewer schools and funding, unrealistic standards, that with the modern classroom crowd, and I don't give a damn kids, our future has gone bleak. You undermine the educational system and remove the spank them right of the parents and you have the America of today. Now extremes exist in everything, but where the rights of the parents are paramount, well we have seen the toppling of the family unit that extends to our schools and ultimately the very real demise of society.

Just saying.
