Olympic observations

Yes, I admit it.  I do watch quite a bit of the Olympics.  I suppose my long but unspectacular athletic career keeps me interested.  Here are a few things I have observed over the first few days.

1.  There are still a lot of good kids out there despite the constant barrage of news about the knuckleheads.  Is there anything to not like about Missy Franklin, Allison Schmidt, and many others who handle themselves so well at such a young age?

2.  The Dream Team.  Couldn't care less about a bunch of spoiled, rich, lazy millionaires getting a bunch of hype by beating up on some Argentinians who shoot baskets on dirt courts.  The whole Olympic movement was lessened when someone decided it was okay for NBA players to be involved.

3.  Soccer is indeed the worlds most boring sport, and despite desperate claims by media that it's "finally taking hold" in the US, it isn't, unless you're in 2nd or 3rd grade.

4.  I don't understand the logic that makes synchronized diving (or same-sex diving, where a fall into water with a buddy is followed by public showering) a sport, but says that baseball and softball aren't worthy of competition at this level.

5.  Synchronized swimming.......see number 4.

6.  The Chinese swimmer with the unworldly times in the IM?  Given the history of Chinese athletics, guilty until proven innocent.

7.  Gymnastics.  Incredible athletes, but I automatically cringe at any sport where scores are subjective and awarded by "judges".

8.  Looking forward to track and field.  Would love to see Usain Bolt get shut down.....several times.

9.  Do we really need to see Ryan Seacrest as a reporter?

10.  Love the lady who won the skeet competition for the 5th time.  Looks like somebody you might run into at Hy-Vee.

More to come.

Please do.

You're helping my perspective on this event list. I do love to watch figure skating at least as a sport. Otherwise the gymnastics causes me to cringe at times, I have to watch it anyway and but what power they all have!. The running events don't thrill me though..

Nigel,

Womens beach volleyball.

That's all I have to say about that.

The other bit of news I'll be looking for tonight either on local or national telecasts.....coverage of the huge support for the Chick Fil A chain.  It will be interesting to see if NBC, CBS, or any of the other bigshots actually cover this phenomenon.
