Notice what the papers are doing?

Posted in: Muscatine

Good point, tinman....if that pop up blocker happens on the web page after your free views, then the ads cannot be clicked on either.

Got my notice this morning that I can no longer read the journal free online. I wonder if the library will have to start charging a fee to read the papers?

Outrageous!

Another good point NEDL. I have noticed that you can still scroll the page when the pop-up blocker is in place and read articles above and below the blocker.

I also notice what tinman was saying about updates. There are old obits still online that had funerals 4-5 days ago. That is disrespectful to those families in my opinion.

This new publisher/editor did the right thing in firing the past editor Chris. But when he took on double duty is when things changed. I think he is in over his head. From giant photos taking up webpage space, even in obits, to deleting being able to comment on stories and letters to the editor, to this new pay for what you read online....clearly he can't manage this, so he has cut out a bunch of those formerly active usage elements.

The pay thing is a Lee Enterprises directive obviously, as the QC Times put it in effect on the same day with their paper. It might work in the QC, but I'm not so sure here in Muscatine.

I have a friend that works there and I remember when the changes tinman eluded to happened that caused the evening-shift updates. They made it a morning delivery paper from an afternoon delivery paper, so my friend works evenings now. The main stories on this newer online edition are always sports, and those links seem to stay for days and days. And video clips of events stay for months and months on the webpage until finally replaced.

The content and quality does not go up, even if you pay to read it online. And obviously, there are no proof-readers anymore. So just what does an "editor" edit?

I'm done bitching now. But "you get what you pay for" doesn't even apply.
