Notice what the papers are doing?

Posted in: Muscatine

Another good point NEDL. I have noticed that you can still scroll the page when the pop-up blocker is in place and read articles above and below the blocker.

I also notice what tinman was saying about updates. There are old obits still online that had funerals 4-5 days ago. That is disrespectful to those families in my opinion.

This new publisher/editor did the right thing in firing the past editor Chris. But when he took on double duty is when things changed. I think he is in over his head. From giant photos taking up webpage space, even in obits, to deleting being able to comment on stories and letters to the editor, to this new pay for what you read online....clearly he can't manage this, so he has cut out a bunch of those formerly active usage elements.

The pay thing is a Lee Enterprises directive obviously, as the QC Times put it in effect on the same day with their paper. It might work in the QC, but I'm not so sure here in Muscatine.

I have a friend that works there and I remember when the changes tinman eluded to happened that caused the evening-shift updates. They made it a morning delivery paper from an afternoon delivery paper, so my friend works evenings now. The main stories on this newer online edition are always sports, and those links seem to stay for days and days. And video clips of events stay for months and months on the webpage until finally replaced.

The content and quality does not go up, even if you pay to read it online. And obviously, there are no proof-readers anymore. So just what does an "editor" edit?

I'm done bitching now. But "you get what you pay for" doesn't even apply.

No proofreaders indeed. I got a good laugh when the sauerkraut supper at Zion Lutheran was headlined  that they would "hose" a sauerkraut supper. That is only one example of the writing skills of not only the reporters, but management who write the story headlines. If you request a vacation stop they ask if you want to donate the papers to "newspapers in education." Surely they don't expect teachers to use the error-filled paper to be used in classrooms!

BTW BB, check tinmans post again to see who really posted about  when news is updated and the obits.

Ohp...my bad...sorry, JC.

The Mid-American Nuclear plant story in the Journal said the location in Muscatine County was between 140th and 150th streets and "west of Vail Avenue". I looked up that area on google and then the county's Beacon site that gives property owner information. Wasn't sure if that was the locale or not. I have not and will not pay the Journal to read it online. You can still scroll the page and read what is under the pop-up banner anyway.

Then, I clicked on the KWQC website (free) and read their published story that used names of some of the property owners invited to the closed meeting. Channel six reported it as between 140 and 150 off of "Trail Avenue". When I looked that up, the names of owners matched to the names in the KWQC report for the people interviewed after the meeting.

This is a major story for this area....and the Journal wants paid to read their error-filled rag online.
