The U.S. stayed out of war with, and eventually prevailed over, the Soviets, not because of diplomacy, but because of M.A.D., and Gorbachev's Glasnost, catalyzed by Lech Walesa and the Polish Solidarity movement and the "velvet revolution" in Czechoslovakia . Check history.
Eisenhower rejected his generals ideas and stayed out of Hungary and avoided a war with the Soviet Union. Did Lech Walesa go to war? Did the Poles? Hungarians? Latvians? Tell me which did.
We did not prevail over the Soviets by war. It was by diplomacy and the threat of war. What was "Glasnost" if not diplomacy? The "velvet revolution" was not a war. Nearly all the soviet states escaped the Soviet Union, not by war , but by diplomacy. In some cases there were armed skirmishes but others none. Bosnia. 8000 US troops, and 22,000 from other countries, and still troops there today. Military action forced the Dayton Agreement. |

...and that was not diplomacy by Clinton. |
