Creep of the Week: Ohio Rep. Ron Hood

Ohio Rep. Ron Hood

I'll admit, it's hard to have a sense of humor about the sweep of anti-gay adoption bills cropping up. It's just so insulting to the very core to the many LGBT people raising kids - and all of the people who know and love them.
So thank goodness for Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Ohio), who has proposed a bill to ban ''GOP adoptions.'' The fake ban was Hagan's response to a real ''gay adoption'' ban proposed by Ohio Rep. Ron Hood (R-Asheville).
Hagan sent out a memo to the rest of the Ohio Senate alerting them to the problem of GOP adoptions. The memo reads, ''Credible research exists that strongly suggests that adopted children raised in Republican households, though significantly wealthier than their Democrat-raised counterparts, are more at risk for developing emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, an alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves, and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities.''
Oh, that Hagan. What a cut-up.
Of course, we can laugh at the absurdity of his proposal because he's joking. No one would really advocate banning Republicans from adopting children. Everyone knows there are many loving, capable parents of the GOP persuasion.
Unfortunately, Rep. Hood was not joking when he said that adoptions should not be permitted ''if the individual is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual; the individual is a stepparent of the child to be adopted and is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual; the individual resides with an individual who the court determines is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual.''
While just as absurd as Hagan's idea, this one is actually being entertained. Thankfully, it's not going far. Earlier this month House Speaker Jon A. Husted (R-Kettering) basically told Hood to go blow. He's not letting the bill move.
''Most reasonable people would have a preference for being in a loving, alternative setting rather than an abusive, heterosexual setting,'' Husted's Chief of Staff Scott Borgemenke told The Columbus Dispatch. ''I don't think that's a partisan issue. I think that's the truth.''
Husted would rather spend legislative time on things that impact everyone in Ohio. Real problems - like, oh, jobs.
''There's a growing concern within the Republican party of continuing to introduce this divisive legislation,'' Borgemenke said. ''We don't think there's some cottage industry of homosexual adoptions. We do believe people are losing their jobs.''
See? Some Republicans can do the right thing. Go, Husted.
But Hood is still determined to muscle his measure to the floor.
''Studies have shown that the optimal setting to raise children in is a traditional setting with a mom and a dad,'' Hood told the Dispatch, warning that the kids of gay parents are at ''increased risk'' of being physically and emotionally messed up.
Of course, the only studies that have shown this to be true are done by right-wing crackpots. Credible studies have shown the kids of LGBT parents are doing just fine, thank you.

The same guy?

Is this the same guy whos' signs I see up and down Diley road and in front of that pathetic old clunker of a strip mall on Hill?

I don't know Kathy Mowrey at all. From what I read she seems like a decent enough person and is dedicated to what she believes in. However, when I see her sign grouped with some of the other Yahoo's like, Hood, in front of certain businesses or residences I can't possibly vote for her.

Of course the 'good' Republican club isn't doing those they supported any favors either with their rubber-stamping grouping of signs.

Only in Fairfield county could politics make communism sound appealing.
Kiss of Death

Looking just below the surface of these candidates (Ron Hood, Kathy Mowery, and Mike Kiger) here locally you will find none other than a recently departed Pickerington City Council man and former Fairfield County Party Chairman Brian Fox. Clearly Mr. Fox is a political whore who will sell his services to the highest bidder regardless of the content of the character of the candidates he is prompting.

His fall from grace with the county party was do mostly to his un-dieing support for the former Sheriff DeMastry. Even after the sheriff was charged Mr. Fox continued to sign his nominating petitions and I believe someone told me at one time that he even had a DeMastry campaign sign still hanging in his garage as recently as two years ago.

Then a few years ago he and Maxey got Judge McAuliffe to join the Pickerington area Lion's Club. I still have the picture from the paper of McAuliffe being flanked by the county party chairman Fox and his able assistant Craig Maxey. I believe just a few weeks after the photo was taken the Judge was arrested without bail because he was a flight risk and because he was caught on tape threatening to kill the potential witnesses. I also understand that Maxey has the judge's power of attorney and how well must you know someone to allow them to take over your finances. Clearly the Judge is smart enough to know that he has something hanging over Maxey's head to keep him in line.

Then we shouldn't forget the poor soul of a Judge that he sponsored in 2003 by the name of Steven Jackson. Mr. Jackson was appointed to serve as municipal judge while Brian Fox was chairman of the County Republican Party. Fortunately for the county residents Judge Jackson at the time had to stand for election. In four short months the appointed Judge Jackson allowed his docket to get over filled mainly because he wanted to take all of his Fridays off let at least four criminal cases be dismissed do to not having a speedy trial. Unfortunately one of those released was a suspected child abuser. The police needed more time to finish their investigation and Judge Jackson was forced to dismiss the case because he was poorly organized and lazy.

Despite Judge Jackson's incompetence he was smart enough to realize once he was behind in the polls to Judge Trimmer that an endorsement by Brian Fox was a kiss of death.

I agree that birds of a feather do stick together. Considering Fox's past record on selecting candidates I would warn voter BEWARE.

Go ahead POA

I think it is odd that a person running for Judge or any other elected office for that matter would allow their signs to be placed on the property of a convicted felon. I just drove by the McAuliffe property on Diley Road and sure enough we have Kiger, Kathy Mowery and Ron Hood all proudly displaying their signs on the incarcerated Judge's land. It has to make you wonder are they close personal friends? Does the Judge know? Has the Judge given to their campaigns? I know that Fox and Maxey keep in touch so it is no wonder that they have been using the judges property for sign location for folks locally like Bill Wright and Mike Sabatino.

They are slowing trying to rebuild the corrupt political power base they once had. If we all become complacent again you will see them back in power in just few election cycles.
