Schaffer or Hood?

Posted in: PATA
Huh?

Okay, so you've trashed Ron Hood. Are there any good reasons to support Tim Schaffer?

I don't buy that he is distancing himself from Russell Johnson, considering the fact that he is supporting all of the people from his church who are running for office - Debbie Smalley, Dave Phalen, David Smalley.

As for pro-life, he is apparently only pro-life for fetuses, but not mothers. Don't forget, he co-sponsored a bill to end all abortion in Ohio, even if necessary for the life of the mother.

Maybe he and I can come to a truce about this - he stays out of decisions concerning my uterus, and I stay out of decisions involving his prostate.

As an aside, if he really is pro-life, as he claims, why doesn't he have any kids?

Obviously getting into a debate about abortion will go no where. Despite what you think about abortion it really doesn't matter if the Ohio General Assembly passes a law outlawing abortion. None of these laws will go into effect until they have been heard before the United States Supreme Court. So if you are a Republican all of your candidates are saying they are pro-life. If you make your decision at the polls based solely on the pro-life issue then you have missed the point on many other very important issues.

What I think the best asset that Representative Schaffer has going for him is his experience. In just a couple of terms in office Mr. Schaffer was elected as Chairman of a number of committees. In a legislative body it is very important to be elected by the members of that body to get laws passed and to get them enacted. To do that sometimes you must not make waves and you must be very principled. That is not saying ''you must go along to get along''. What it is saying is that Mr. Schaffer has the respect of the other elected members of the Ohio House.

On the other hand, Mr. Hood had lost his seat in the Canton area and now has moved districts and currently lives in the Ashville area. He is a born again Conservative. He is in his second term there. You can spot these guys a mile away. They are willing to uproot their family to start over to just gain political favor in an new area when and if they had been principled in the original setting they would have been successful. We have a couple of local politicians that fit that mold also. They should be called opportunist.

Clearly Mr. Schaffer has paid his dues to the Fairfield County Republicans and he is well respected among them. He also is well respected in the Ohio General Assembly. That is very important to have that respect to get your agenda passed and enacted.

I have never known Mr. Schaffer to hide from an issue. Cleary I have confronted him on several issues and he has stood his ground. I do know Mr. Schaffer is well aware of the traffic situation within Fairfield county and especially Pickerington. He also knows that we must have another exit on I-70 somewhere between 256 and 310. I have heard from more than one source that our current State Senator Jay Hottinger killed the plan to place an exit there about 6 years ago. However you look at this whether it be pork barrel politics or what ever we need someone from Fairfield County to serve in the Ohio Senate. Our county has been ignored by ODOT for over 40 years now. Maybe it is time to have them focus on us for a change.

Representative Schaffer has tried to work on and fix the school funding formula. Despite the fact that the state is spending millions more than a few years ago on education it still comes up short. Trying to fix this problem and not raise taxes is a huge task.

So if you are Republican, and you want someone in office that is honest, hardworking and dependable then Representative Tim Schaffer is the man. If you are pro-choice, and liberal then you probably should look at voting Democrat.
