Thanks Mr. Hackworth

Mr. Hackworth,

Thanks so much for responding to the topic of the week. It appears you were hoodwinked by this Owens character. Having met the man and never been too impressed with him personally or his reporting style my opinion is that he is not smart enough to engineer this yellow journalism. From the Thinkquest Library: ?“Yellow journalism, in short, is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact. Moreover, the practice of yellow journalism involved sensationalism, distorted stories, and misleading images for the sole purpose of boosting newspaper sales and exciting public opinion.?”

Let me express my disappointment and disgust with Owens, Tim Krumlauf and the Times-Sun for allowing this sensationalism to reach print. Clearly factions of the city and township officials are not satisfied with facts, figures, truth and other data that clearly may show that agreements of cooperation, memorandums of understanding and the like are so openly biased in favor of entities other than the residents and taxpayers of this city. It appears that these factions may have been successful in exploiting an inexperienced and naive cub reporter. However, the editor is neither inexperienced nor naive so shame on you Tim.

I?’ll shake my finger one other time then get on to how I feel about a paper township. Shame on you Keith Smith. I remember Mr. Smith coming to my house and talking to me at length about tax relief for seniors like me and my husband. Now it appears he has the opportunity to openly support tax relief and he is mute on the subject. Frankly Mr. Smith, you are an extreme disappointment to me and the seniors in this community. You have contributed nothing to this city since your election. I won?’t acknowledge Jeff Fix in this matter. I was a teacher for over 35 years in this community and I have seen a Jeff Fix in my class year after year. They are so obsessively hungry for attention, whether good or bad, that they will say or do anything good or bad to get it. They were generally spoiled children of little substance who grew up to be spoiled adults of even less substance.

Ted, I voted for people like you and Brian Wisniewski to represent me as a resident and taxpayer. I demand that my elected officials act in my best interest at all times. If cooperating with other local governments is of benefit to us then, by all means, pursue cooperation. However, if cooperation efforts are fruitless and do nothing but serve personal agendas of few in the city and many outside the city then stand your ground and fight. You are honor bound to act on our behalf only. You need to convince your council-mates of the same.

My opinion of the township is something like my opinion of Mr. Fix. They take and take and give very little back. The township is in a parasitic relationship with the city and county and always has been. They take without giving. What does the township give to me, as a city resident? I don?’t see anything. They don?’t borrow money to make improvements, do they? What do we give the township? Parks, shopping, restaurants, improvements like Diley Road, and how much of that is n the township?

So as to not seem like an angry, rambling old woman Mr. Hackworth, I?’ll end this with my words of encouragement to keep fighting the good fight. Remain vigilant in your avocation of acting in the best interest of this city and her residents. If the neighboring governments wish to have someone act in their best interests, then they should elect someone to do that. Perhaps Mr. Fix and Mr. Smith could think of running for township trustee. And lastly, Trustee is a bad word to have to do when you are talking about the likes of Mr. Dunlap, Myers and Weltlich. They are not at all trustworthy.

Off the record

Over the last year or so, David Owen has called me to get information and find out about different issues facing council. Many times during these ''talks'' I freely gave him information of what I knew so to speak and my opinion. In the case of the paper township I didn't think he would go public with it because I had just started the process and much of the information that I had requested was not back to me yet. I can't say I demanded that what I was saying was off the record but I did assume that and probably I shouldn't have.

Obviously; I would have liked a better time and a better forum to present the results of what I found in my informational search. It now appears an up hill battle to present this to council and to ever get it to the voters. For that I am sorry.

Go get em Ted

Wow, what an opportunity for the city and school to work together on an issue. Just think, if the average city taxpayer had their taxes reduced they could maybe use that money toward supporting school levies.

Working together, the city and schools could finally prove what's been said all along and that is the township never pulls their weight on overall community issues.
Startup Costs

Ted,
I think it is fantastic to look into new ideas like this. I will admit I am a big skeptic of it though. I was weary seeing it in the paper with no real information to it, but it makes sense now that you did not mean for it to be in the paper.

From a startup cost standpoint, how much would this cost to have your own firestation from scratch. Not to echo Terry Dunlap or anything cause I think he was just a quote hunter, but how much does a single squad and engine itself cost or rent or however you would go about it.

I guess I just have alot of small questions like that, but I am sure more will come as you find out more about it. Can you though give us an example of a community that this has taken place?
