North and Central

Posted in: PATA
As we continue to see the divide between the North and the Central school districts we see that the current school board has decided to build in the next ten years TWO new high schools. These NEW High schools will accommodate the freshmen classes. (For Wiz this information is contained in the ten year Master Plan). This will continue to keep the two parts seprated and it will cost MORE than building a third High School. This is nothing more than the elistist keeping away from the po' folks.

Now for all of those that try to argue that the two schools are the SAME. If you feel that then please answer this question for me:

In the Ten Master plan they list the replacement values of the schools.

Central: $36,927,716

North: $57,606,540

Ridgeview: $20,334,955

Lakeview: $24,939,199

Just the North High school standing alone has more replacement value than the Ridgeview/Tiger Stadium and Central High School combined.

Please note the cost per square foot was the same number used for both High Schools. ($178 per sq ft)

Total square footage for North 313,165

Total square footage for Central: 201,406

Wiz; I got my information from the PLSD master plan.

2 new high schools?

I just looked at the masterplan, on the district's website, and saw the mention of 2 new high schools. It also mentioned renovation and additions to North and Central. I thought I read that the master plan was revised and approved to eliminate the need for 2 new high schools by putting additions on to the 2 current high schools. Can anyone confirm that this is the latest and greatest?
This year

It was dated March of 2007.
Spending more than needed.

Here is the issue I have been doing the numbers.

In a perfect world where every class working it's way through the system were equal then today with 10,156 kids in the system each class size should be around 781 students (that is 10,156 divided by 13 equals 781).

Since we have two high schools each grade level in each high school should have around 390 students each. If we multiply that by 4 then each Pickerington High School currently would have 1,560 students each. However according to the ten year Master Plan, North has an enrollment of 1676 and Central has an enrollment of 1216. If you add the two numbers together and divide by four you get a current class size of the two high schools of 723. So the classes working there way through system are smaller than projected as a general statement.

In 2005 the school looked into their facilities. They used the DeJong report to help them with schools and how large to make them. They predicted for this school year we would have 3177 students in the two High schools or 794 student per grade level as an average.

So the Dejong report over stated the student population by 9% only two years out or after their study.

If we are going to build two high schools and the capacity of each new High school is say 600 students each then that will require us the build single school buildings with a square footage of 108,000 @ $178 per square foot equals $19,224,000 for each new high school. Or $38,448,000 for two of them. If we build only one freshman school with 1200 kids then the square footage would be 200,400 @ $178 per sq ft or $35,671,200. The different being $2,776,800.

So if each class were 1200 students in each of the 13 grade levels the total school population would be 15,600 total students in the district. Even the Dejong report only projects 12,304 students by the year school 2013-2014. Since they have missed this year by 9% under. I doubt the school district will reach the 15,600 by 2017-2018 under there plan. .

No where in the plan does the district mention a local funding initiative to build an adequate football stadium for Central. Maybe it is time.
