Housing Boom gone Kaput

Only what I heard

For some reason there were reluctance from the school administration last year to give us a clear count. In the 2005 to 2006 school year the official enrollment (ADM) was 9713. In the 2006-2007 school year all I ever heard was that the school enrollment was a little over 10,000. I later heard and it wasn't official that the number was 10,015.

So if you have updated information on 06-07 then please let us have it.
Enrollment

The actual enrollment is taken the first week of October across the state. There was a part of the new budget in place to have a second count taken in February that would help fast growing districts like Pickerington. I'm told Strickland took that out of the budget most recently passed.

The state funding is tied directly to this student count. Districts that grow quickly get killed because any student that move in after that count date do not get state funds to move with them - their old districts continue to get that students dollars until they are counted again.

Looking back through some local papers in October (can get at the library) 10,018 was the official count.
Stop a minute, here

Here's the data on the district as reported to the department of education. Supporting documentation for most recent data is attached.

As a polynomial trend, we can say, given this data set, there is a 99.54% confidence interval that at the end of 2007-08, PLSD will report 10,198 students. At the end of 2008-09, PLSD will report 10,645.

This is a 5.45% growth between 06-07 and 07-08 and a 10.07% growth between 06-07 and 08-09. There is a 52.35% growth in attendance over the ten years 1996-97 and 2006-07.

I say, build the schools. Stop building houses. Never build apartments or WalMart.

Fight the Diley widening project.

Old Data

Mr. Wizard,

I will tell you that I got most of my numbers from the newspaper and asking Dr. Theide directly. I was off by THREE in last year's ''average daily membership'' number taken in the first week of October of 2006. Someone corrected me with a figure of 10,018 for the 06-07 school year.

Like many here in the district you think that you can fix things with radical actions of not allowing ANYTHING to be built ever again in Pickerington.

So you fired the first shot so what is wrong with building apartments?

Second shot is about Wal-Mart. What is wrong about building a Wal-mart? or is it ANY big Box development?

I would also throw in the question of how under the Ohio constitution do you justify what you suggest above? Can you legally zone out apartments or big box stores?

Finally buried in one of my comments is the fact that using data from the Ohio Department of Education is risky. Most of the time it is delayed at least two years so you are making assumptions with OLD data. In fact it looks to me that the data you posted is one year behind.
