Always remember
Wizard; you seem to know a lot about the schools and you seemed to be firmly attached to the operations of the school. Based on some of your postings I would get the impression that you have locked yourself in a broom closet in one of the schools and you are hoping a teacher comes along to let you out soon. There is very little historical value to my story. It happened and the couple of days on the sub being shared with the Marines were uneventful. Their story is the historical part. Since I was playing a support role I was never aware of their mission. I learned of their deaths in the Navy Times published in the late fall (October, November) of 1966. Their action was the story and the history. What I was trying to state is that those of us that have served could have been pulled into battle and into action by nothing more than fate. If the weather had been different that night I may have been required to help swim the equipment into the beach. If I had been stranded on the beach then I may have become a Marine for a short time. I also may not be here today to enjoy the rest of my life. My remarks are aimed at the jerk that viewed it an obligation to stand for the colors and applaud our veterans in our home town parades. Maybe they didn?’t receive any wounds and they may have never came close to real live action but they were there and anything can and could have happened. I am sure they saw and heard more than most of us will ever imagine can happen to human beings. If they chose to wear their hair long today then I will fight to defend their rights to do so. They still get my full respect. The point here is the Marines that I briefly knew in 1966 were fine people. You would have been happy to have them as neighbors or even school teachers they would have done well in what ever they tried to do. They were not illiterate animals or killing machines robots. They had families and they loved their country. I would ask that we not forget them and the sacrifices they gave to their country. Those of us that walk the parades and have joined service organizations like the VFW or American Legion are trying to preserve that memory of those that have fallen in battle for us. don't forget that By A Sailor |
