THE JEDD continued
The Pickerington meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan 15 at Pickerington City Hall before city council's regular meeting.
Violet Township has scheduled a public meeting at 8 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Violet Township office on Rustic Drive.
If all of the communities eventually approve the JEDD's formation, they will be eligible to share the revenues it generates.
Shupe said businesses would locate to the JEDD area regardless of whether the agreement is in place because the infrastructure is already there. She also said she fears businesses that don't want to join the JEDD will have their rezoning requests rejected.
Violet Township trustee Gary Weltlich said he and his fellow trustees would do nothing to deter business development in the area. Weltlich said the JEDD would guarantee that the U.S. 33 corridor in Violet and the adjacent townships develops with a commercial focus rather than a residential one.
Weltlich said future developers would be asked to pay for infrastructure improvements and that businesses seeking rezoning in the proposed district would be asked to join the JEDD.
He said the JEDD's benefit to businesses is that companies wishing to locate within the designated area could be confident that their zoning requests will be approved.
Pickerington Mayor David Shaver said some observers incorrectly believe the JEDD agreement would force the city to provide free sewer and water services. Shaver said Pickerington will be required to provide sewer and water services at a normal outside rate to those within the JEDD area.
He said council's finance committee and council itself should not try to renegotiate the agreement because it would be difficult for the five parties to reach a new agreement.
