Not that great
After reviewing the PEA Master Agreement I have found the teachers' co-pays, deductibles, annual limits and prescription co-pays are all higher than my private company's benefit plan.
They pay a smaller percentage of the premium than I do, however my annual pay increases, bonus structure and retirement plan greatly exceed what is offered to the PLSD staff.
Annual pay increases are limited to 3%...at best.

The Master Agreement Health package dows not allow for Flexible Spending account for either healthcare, child/dependent care.
The options are extremely limited as compared to what is offered in the private sector. As with a typical union shop, no choices. You get what you get.
Afer all STRS is nothing but a pension fund, antiquated and teh long-term stability is risky at best. With the financial situatioin of the education profession what makes it any different than pilots or auto workers???
If the pay and benefits are so outragous, if the hours are so gravy and the accountability is all smoke and mirrors as protected by the union, why is there a teacher shortage? If our teachers are over compensated, why are institutions of higher learning crammed with accountants, attorneys-to-be and the like and not education majors?

Please provide the actual data
Nice summary, but real data is what we need. What are those copay $, deductible $, etc.? Perhaps your private plan is not representative of the broad private world?
Since you have access to the PLSD data please post it for the forum to review in detail.

My costs
Current monthly medical and dental costs for a family:
Medical: $357.08 Dental: $58.10
$20.00 co-pay in network. 10% co-insure with a $200 deductible per person. $2,000 per person limit with a $6,000 family limit. All in-network physicians.
Cost increases the past four years:
Medical - +11.9% in 2004, +14.7% in 2005, +5.0% in 2006, unchanged in 2007 and remains unchanged for 2008
Dental - +10.4% in 2004, +8.96% in 2005, + 4.93% in 2006, unchanged in 2007 and 2008.
