personally, i think it is a good idea, but i was not at the meeting. the idea that kids are switching schools just for sports seems to put emphasis on the wrong things and leads to community division. imho.

Kids should go to the school where they live. They should not be allowed to go to the school they want to go to because the sports program at one is better.

My thought is that if the kids (or more likely the parents) want to switch schools they should be required to MOVE TO THAT SIDE OF TOWN.

Point of clarification re: the PLSD?’s Contract with the Community ?…

Dr. Mantia has stated that the district will not come back to the voters for additional instructional (or, operating) money for 4 years IF BOTH the 5.0 replacement levy passed in November 2007 AND the 7.9 renewal passes in March 2008.

Instructional (or, operating ?… same thing) LEVIES cover operating costs of the school district. Those costs include staff salaries and benefits (largest portion), textbooks, transportation, etc.

BONDS cover the costs of construction and/or capital expenditures.

Per the state, school districts can?’t mix the two pots of money.

While the difference is easy to forget, I remember a catch phrase from at least two of the last campaigns. Seen it in the paper recently, too, I think.

Bonds are for buildings.
Levies are for learning.

Kinda catchy. And it helps me to remember the difference between the two.

I like Mantia?’s Contract with the Community. Here's hoping that she and the Board can adhere to it!
