I am hearing some very disturbing information coming out of the council last night. I think we need to contact some members of our council and let them know just how you feel about services and your desire to support the current level of service.
I understand we had three members of council vote not to place a 2% income tax increase on the November ballot.
I understand Councilman Sauer stated that he was a conservative and he didn?’t believe in raising taxes. In fact he offered an amendment to the ballot ordinance to end the 2% income tax in 10 years. Clearly Sauer has slept through the budget process. He is so fearful to vote for anything that might lose him some votes. Or maybe he is simply ignorant of the facts and has no concept of the bigger picture. In any event he is about to make a much harder decision and that is to disband most of the Pickerington Police Force.
Councilwoman Hammond says the current ballot issue didn?’t raise enough money for the city. I believe at least two people have spoken publicly that the city needs around 1 million in new revenues to keep the status quo. As I understand it this issue was estimated to raise the city revenues by $1.7 million per year. Just how much does Cristie think we need?
Councilman Sabatino is up to his usual and that is to infuse rhetoric onto the subject to confuse and doom the issue. Clearly having the issue fail last night will save Mike money until he bails out of town next year. I believe I recall Mr. Sabatino complaining that we didn?’t have enough police officers over the years but he now dooms the department to laying off a half dozen officers or more.
Finally Councilman Smith didn?’t show up and that left the issue in limbo and out the door. Instead of having an orderly effort of discussing the issues in front of the Finance committee we now have a pubic debate in front of the press and they have drug it out in full view now. Smith missed the Finance meeting in May to send this to council now he misses the meeting to put it on the ballot.
If Sauer and Hammond were against this tax increase why did they both vote to send it to council out of the Finance committee? I think we have some real irresponsible people on council counting votes for the next election and letting the city suffer in the meantime.
All this was played to Gary Weltlich smiling in gallery.
Can't wait to read his snide remarks about the process.
