There is a concern that the council will simply replace the outgoing members with other individuals who are ''clones'' of the existing council. I hope that this is not true and that my fellow council members are willing to recognize that a substantial portion of the community, if not the overwhelming majority, is dissatisfied with the current leadership and is hoping for a new direction. I believe it would be difficult for this community to accept the appointment of candidates who would continue the status quo.
Since the applications are still coming in for council positions, I have no idea as to the qualifications of the candidates and therefore am not in a position to give recommendations. I hope that we are swamped with applications from qualified individuals. Nevertheless, having stated this, at this point I believe serious consideration should be given to Ted Hackworth for one of the open positions on council. Mr. Hackworth is a very distinguished member of this community and has repeatedly demonstrated the courage of his convictions. The popularity of the recent charter amendment sponsored by Mr. Hackworth indicates that his views resonate with a substantial portion of the community. In addition, the acceptance of such a well-known opposition figure would demonstrate to the community that the council that is capable of change.
There is, of course, more than one council position and I would appreciate any suggestions as to who should fill these positions. I would request that any recommendation that you make to council be copied to me. My address is David Shaver, Esq., Shaver and Hoke, Inc., PO Box 320, Pickerington, Ohio.
