POLK COUNTY HISTORICAL STUDIES --- DES MOINES, IOWA

The city is considering forming a DM History and Heritage Commission. Yeah! Also, there is discussion about the naming of instructure, such as the new bridge over the DM river near the Birthplace Cabin Memorial. I submit the name ''The Point'' bridge because that area was regularly referred to as ''The Point'' in early years. Any comments about this or other DM history comments? Come on, don't be shy, I hope Anne Nonymus joins the conversation.

DM City Hall plaque/marker

Recently I have seen two news reports from cities (I remember that one of them was New Orleans) in which the news reporter stood in front of a marker that showed the name of the city and had some verbage below the title (that was too small to read on TV). I suggest that the city of Des Moines put a similar marker in front of City Hall. It could include a brief summary of the history of the city and how the name came about. The cost would be approximately $2,000-$10,000 depending upon how much it says. When the caucuses and other news reports come from Des Moines the reporters usually stand in front of the capitol, but this would be a great place that would also highlight the city rather than the state. It would probably be best to match the marker placed in front of Fort DM II. This is a pretty low price for some good PR, and also it might bring about additional interest in city history. Any comments?

I hope I'm wrong, but isn't anyone interested in Des Moines, Iowa history?
