What does it cost to be a member?

If you are interested in making Pikes Peak Park a "Safer and Better" place to live, your half way there. Come to a meeting and let others hear your ideas and listen to theirs with the first part as your target and you done the the other half. That's right, your dues are a little time each month and the use of your brain to help solve the problems we all face.

What have you done that I would know about?

1.)The traffic quieting done with the addition of three 4way stops in the PARK. The remarking of Monterey Road and Delta Drive to allow curb parking lanes and bike lanes. 2.)The drainage improvements on Verde Drive and Capulin along with the handicapable corner cuts on those streets. 3.) The major city drainage project of covering the Monterey Storm Drainage Ditch to eliminate the danger elementary school have faced since the neighborhood was built. 4.) We serve as the City's Planning Dept. contact point for construction not only in the neighborhood but the entire surrounding area.

What is PRIDE in the PARK?

"PRIDE in the PARK”, is a neighborhood association in the south end of Colorado Springs. The housing development of Pikes Peak Park was built in the early 60's. Like all neighborhoods we are working to build the Pride of the residents in their neighborhood, for us it has been since April 1996. Our focus has always been to make our area 'Better and Safer' for all residents. We are a Neighborhood Association not a home owners group. We stress this because a neighborhood is made up of everyone that, lives, works or travels through it. We operate on donations from the members and businesses. The members roll up their sleeves and work to make things better.

What have you done to make the neighborhood better?

?A couple of examples of the types of projects we have held is our Annual Prune Up the Park project. We go out and trim bushes and trees for neighbors that don’t have the tools or strength to do it themselves. We clear branches that are hanging over the sidewalks or blocking the view at driveways and intersections. All materials are recycled into mulch, all at no cost to the residents (19 pickup loads last year). Another project is our Annual Pick up the Park. The residents can drop off or we will pick up junk or trash that anyone has and haul it to dumpsters provided by one of several trash hauling companies. This project is also done by volunteers and is at no cost to the residents. We have spearheaded a number of safety projects in our seven years. The most notable is our Annual "Caution Kids" Campaign, this has neighbors tying orange ribbons to their mail box poles or their fences. These serve a dual purpose, one is to remind drivers to slow down because the children are back in school, the second is to remind the children that they are about to enter a dangerous place, the street.

We have worked with the city in a cooperative mode instead of confrontational to improve the safety of the streets. This has been done by identifying intersections that were dangerous for children traveling to school and drivers pulling out into traffic. Both of those intersections are now four-way stops. The addition of a second flashing light to better identify one of our school zones. Having a street changed from four lanes to two lanes and a turn lane to slow traffic past that same school. Drainage and street lighting problems have been identified and both those city agencies are working closely with us to make the changes that will increase safety at night and reduce ice build up during the cold spells here in the Springs.
