If you actually believe that the 2nd amendment to the constitution was adopted because of hunting rights or because of personal self defense, and not because the founders wanted to guarantee a means for the citizenry to prevent central governmental tyranny, ....
Of course it wasn't for hunting or self defense, nobody I know believes that. However the main push of the NRA and its followere seems to be for every citizen to have multiple weapons for self defense. They also use the scare tactic that the government is trying to take away you shotgun. They talk a lot less about the militia aspect.
It was to establish a militia. It was to have a ready source of armed citizens in case the government needed to raise an army on short notice. Not to fight itself but to fight others.

I'll ignore the last of this but I think I have a pretty good understanding of the constitution and amendments.
The amendment itself: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
I put a little more emphasis on Militia. Militia, a force raised from the civilian population to supplement a regular army in an emergency.(dictionary definition) If it was intended for any citizen or group of citizens to accumulate all the weapons their little hearts desired, why the "well regulated"? That indicates some higher control---such as the federal government. |

A "well regulated militia" obviously refers to the militia being well regulated, not the people being well regulated! In addition, you misinterpret the meaning of "well regulated", using current day interpretation. The meaning of "regulate" at the time of the creation of the 2nd amendment meant something more along the lines of making things work and function properly, like a well regulated watch, etc. From my reading of material from the colonial era, I have come to understand that "well regulated militia" had a meaning at that time (ca. 1789) in the nature of "a properly functioning militia" - which would mean something along the lines of a properly trained and equipped militia (since it was common at that time for militiamen to bring their Here we have again, with you, another instance of someone not knowing what they are talking about. |
