SPEED HUMPS

Posted in: San Antonio Creekside
Big Mistake

Well, from reading your messages on this board, you sound very excited that speed bumps are installed in Creekside. I am totally against it! First of all, I do my best to abide with the 30 mph limit within the neighborhood. Secondly, I am not a parent (yet!), but rest assure that when I do, I will teach my kids not to play on the streets.
My reason for not having a speed bump - it might one day compromise the life of a fellow resident who may require immediate medical attention. Speed bumps will increase the amount of time a fire truck or EMS unit arrives at the scene. A first responding fire truck must almost come to a complete stop in order to run over the speed bumps.
I work for the Fire Department and I have voiced my concerns about speed bumps in past meetings. Obviously, these concerns were ignored. Mr. Christian, I wonder if you will still be excited about speed bumps the day someone passes on or someone's property is destroyed by fire because emergency personnel did not arrive as soon as possible! I hope more residents can voice their opposition to this issue so that future speed bumps can be avoided.

If you only new

OK, first reply to the homeowner - I do agree with you regarding the fact that parents should teach their children not to play in the street, but as we all know - not all children listen and not all drivers pay attention (1 child was hit only a few feet from the curb). Some parents do let there children play out front which there is nothing we can do about that. Having spoken with several SAPD officers - one of whom is my best friend, they have frequently stated that speed bumps will help reduce the speeding problem in our neighborhood. As an EMT/Fire Dept. worker, I'm sure that you understand that you also cannot be everywhere at once. I'm also with the Cellular on Patrol from the West Side Sub and stay informed with current safety issues in our area. Regarding the second issue mentioned, approximately 3 yrs. ago my wife and our neighbor went door to door to get the signatures needed for the humps and guess what? Everyone on our street signed except for 3 people. That was approx. 90% of Alexa Place residents who wanted them. So, after that, we were turned down by the Fire Department Chief for speed bumps - due to response time issue. The speed bumps that are currently installed on Alexa Place were approved by the Fire department because these humps are specially made to fit the tires of an Emergency vehicle to go through with out slowing down, so therefore this will not add to the response time. Just out of curiosity, I'm surprised that you're not aware of this since you work for the fire department. I'm sure your Fire Chief would provide you with more info. regarding these new types of speed humps if you asked. The bottom line is this - there are more people who want them than those who don't want them. Not only do we have children to provide a safe environment for, but we also have adults who walk at night or jog. These adults also attended the meetings and expressed their views that they were pleased to see our neighborhood finally get speed humps. Since you work in the area of saving lives, I am surprised that you are against increasing the safety of our neighborhood and preventing more accidents. I really appreciate a healthy debate about this topic. Thank you for sharing your views. Wayne.

Selfish

I am replying to this because of the selfishness you seem to represent in the people that are against the speed humps. I am sorry if they are preventing you from speeding down the street, or your ability to do so when you are running late for work or whatever other engagement you may have. My daughter, however, was hit by a truck speeding down this same very street that you are so concerned about. I will be glad to sacrifice all the children on this street to you if you still feel that it is necessary to not have the speedhumps. Is it that much trouble to start your journey maybe two minutes earlier and actually drive the speed limit? How much harm are they causing if the end result is the safety of the people, and most importantly the children, on this street? I don't think that the speed humps do anything but provide at least a greater chance for safety for our children. Living on this street I have noticed a considerable change in the way that people drive down our street. It has made a believer out of me. I will gladly trade a couple of seconds to slow down, for a lifetime for my children.

Think

Well obviously the police either do not do enough of their job, don't care, or can't do their job, because I see people speeding down our streets every day. I understand that you say you have a child of your own and you do not allow your child to play in the street, but how many people actually do. Most children that are hit by cars are done so by accident and you should know that. A child runs into the street for innocent reasons - chasing a ball, a pet or any number of things - but they do run out into them, and children of all ages. What is to prevent a person from speeding down the street and not have the ability to stop in enough time to prevent their harm. I am sure that the driver does not intend to do so either. But that is why they are called accidents. The police cannot stop everything, otherwise there would be no crime, and you should know that. All I am saying is that the speed humps provide a sort of forced incentive to stay at a slower speed. If that save one child and only one then that is enough.
