Super Wal-Mart

Posted in: Ridge at Fox Run
At the Annual Homeowners' Meeting, El Paso County Commissioner Duncan Bremer stated that it was a "Done Deal" that a Super Wal-Mart was going to move in just south of King Soopers. I believe that that would be bad.
I talked to Patrick Mulready, the Director of Planning for the Town of Monument. Mr. Mulready's phone number is 495-15234. Mr. Mulready said that if a Super Wal-Mart moved in just south of King Soopers that the Town of Monument would have to annex the land so that Wal-Mart could have water and sewer service. Mr. Mulready told me that he last talked to people from Wal-Mart about six months ago. Mr. Mulready told me that he doesn't consider a Super Wal-Mart to be a done deal.
On the main page, I have posted a link to an anti-Wal-Mart site. Let's stop these guys.

Should we wait another 20 years?

When our family moved here in 1978, one of the areas we looked at was Gleneagle. We noticed that there was no supermarket in the Gleneagle area. I asked several people why and was told nobody wanted one. Well, over 20 years later we finaly have a King Soopers. Do you honestly think that the people who protested the King Soopers drive up to Monument or down to Briargate to get their groceries? I don't think so. If someday there is a Super Wal-mart I will be glad not to have to drive 12 miles to get there. I will also bet that all the people that are fighting to keep out Wal-mart will be there using it just like the people that did not want a supermarket are using the new King Soopers. Milt Calhoun

Not the point

The fact that King Soopers has been added on Baptist Road should not automatically open the door for more retail operations. Baptist Road and the I25 interchange was not designed to handle the traffic the new growth to Gleneagle, Jackson Creek and Foxrun have brought. Although the new residents of these areas have contributed to that growth it should not mean we should close our eyes to planning for continued expansion. Do we really want to see wall to wall retail establishments on Baptist from the highway to Jackson Creek just so we don't have to drive the 7 miles to North Academy? Do you believe the families on North Academy that have had their houses surrounded by the likes of MediaPlay, Cub Foods, HomeDepot and OfficeMax are really happier now that they don't have to drive a couple miles south down Acadmey? None of those retail stores were around on North Academy 5 years ago and look at the traffic madness they have caused on a road that has 3 times that capacity of Baptist. There is nothing that any of those stores offer that I would not be willing to drive 7 miles to get.
Other than traffic growth, take a look at the anti-Walmart site that is linked on the main page. This area does not need a business like theirs.

And another thing....

The real point is that those people that use the King Soopers are typically residents of the area (Glen Eagle, Jackson Creek, Fox Run, Pleasant View)
whereas a Super Walmart would attract people from a much greater area, thus creating more traffic problems than just the area residents using the added retail center. It would go far beyond someone passing by on there way home to get some gorceries at KS.

I also think the walmart proponents are putting the cart before the horse, by putting in a big new retail center BEFORE the improvments to Baptist road are developed. This creates a two fold problem, first we add more traffic to the area using the existing roadways and THEN development of Baptist Road begins with all the increased traffic. Get ready for a never ending cone zone from Jackson Creek to I-25 if this goes through.

I'm against any Walmart on Baptist Road, but would prefer a transition of putting in road improvments BEFORE we add a large retail center and increased traffic.
