Family Disaster Plan

Ways to be prepared for fires, earthquakes and other disasters

1. EDUCATE YOURSELF
o Learn about disasters that may affect you.
o Find out what your community has done to prepare for a disaster.
o Inquire about what special steps you may need to take to assist pets, children or the elderly.
o Learn what plans are in place at your workplace, school or community center.

2. CREATE A PLAN

o Discuss with your family what you will do in the event of a disaster.
o Divide responsibilities among family members and make sure everyone understands what to do.
o Agree on the contacts places and people you will use in your plan.
o Carry relevant information with you.

CONTACTS

o Pick a contact place immediately outside your home for household disasters.
o Pick a familiar place away from your home for everyone to meet at in case you can’t return home.
o Choose a “family contact” that is an out-of-state friend. Carry this phone number.

3. COMPLETE THE CHECKLIST

o Post emergency phone numbers.
o Teach children how to make emergency calls.
o Show family members how to shut off power, gas and water at main switches.
o Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.
Install and maintain smoke detectors.
o Take a First Aid/CPR class.
o Determine escape plans (multiple routes).
o Find safe spots in your home for each disaster.
o Make a Disaster Kit.
o Conduct a home hazard hunt.

DISASTER KIT

o 2,400 calories of food per person per day.
o 1 gallon of water per person per day.
o Blanket
o Poncho
o Flashlight, extra batteries
o Hand warmers
o Tissues
o Sanitary Napkins
o Sanitary Bags
o Portable Radio
o First Aid Kit

FIRST AID KIT

o First Aid guide book (at a glance)
o Band-Aid bandages
o Alcohol cleansing pads
o Ibuprofen tablets, decongestion tablets
o Non-Aspirin tablets
o Triple-Antibiotic ointment packs
o Butterfly closures
o Patch bandage

HOME HAZARD HUNT

o Bookcases, large furniture that is not attached to the wall or fastened down.
o Shelves, wall hangings.
o Glass or other sharp, breakable items.
o Objects that could obstruct exits if they fell.
o Objects too close to gas, electric sources.

4. PRACTICE YOUR PLAN

o Quiz family members every few months.
o Conduct practice drills.
o Replace stored food and water every 6 months.
o Test smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
o Work with your neighbors and friends.
o Continue to educate yourself.
