Don has been in the neighborhood since 1967. Don & Pat were married in 1984. Don taught in the Grossmont School District for 35 years. Pat was a school secretary in the San Diego School District for 20 years. We both retired in 1995. With our combined families we have 5 children and 8 grandchildren -- 5 girls and 3 boys (which includes a set of twins.) They range in age from 9 years to 1 year.
Besides spending time with our children and grandchildren, we enjoy researching our family history, recreational cycling and touring, traveling, and working on neighborhood projects, including the El Cerrito Heights Neighborhood News. Since retiring, we have enjoyed several Elderhostels (including two terrific weeks at Williamsburg, VA), a trip to the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN, and conventions of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
On a recent bicycle tour in Western Canada, Don (in red & white stripes) and his biking companions are greeted by friendly bicycle cops in Winnipeg, who escorted the group into the downtown area. Left to right: Jim Cardot, Paula Kempe, Ray Spangler, Hal Foster, Gordon (a bicycle cop), Don, Bob (another bicyle cop), and Willie Gobert, our only Canadian companion on the trip and the one who arranged for the police escort. The trip covered about 1800 miles, from Vancouver through the beautiful Canadian Rockies, through the Prairie Provinces of Albert, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, to Winnipeg. What a ride!
