I don't care if they sleep 365 days a year! Let them, as long as when I need them they respond.
If it's in the middle of the night, they come. If their own kids are sick, they come to help mine.
We pay them to come when we need to be helped. I don't care what they do the rest of the time.
They deserve what they get and probably more.

Put beds in the Water and Sewer Dept. and the pumping station. A meter reader just got fined $15,000 for not working and a Judge just was let go. (Two more to go watch the Ledger)

What about the cops
Why don't we have the cops sleep so they can be alert when we need them to. The whole lot of them policemen and firemen should be sleeping.

Police Jobs & Fire Jobs
Our Police officers work days, mid or graveyard shift - 40 hours a week. Our Fire employees work 4 on, 2 off rotating shift, but a 42 hour workweek. Both jobs are paid comparably. Police don't have beds to sleep in during graveyard shift, so they catch some winks at home before coming to work at 11pm. Fire come to work at 4pm and as night falls, can sleep in until 7am next morning shift change unless called to duty out in town for fire. Police don't sleep, fire sleep - yet both paid comparably.
Police grow up ladder in rank by taking civil service competitive examinations before Selectmen review Chief's recommendation for promotion. Firefighters take no exams, but when vacancy in higher rank occurs, next senior firefighter gets promotion by chief. Not uncommon for police officers to retire as police patrolman never getting a promotion in their career. Very uncommon for firefighter not to retire at least in rank of Deputy Fire Chief through seniority only promotions up the ladder. Both Deputy Police Chief who must take minimum of three competitive exams to reach that rank retires at similar retirement salary as Deputy Fire Deputy who takes no exams? So firefighters think they are being picked upon? Braintree is currently paying 13 Deputy Fire Chiefs (current and retired alike). Braintree is currently paying three deputy police chiefs (current and reired alike). The system sucks, stinks and is not nearly as fair or warranted as one would be told it is.
