The Houston Citizens Police Academy graduated its first class on August 3, 1989, and has graduated over six hundred fifty students as of June 2000. The Alumni was formed in appreciation for the money, time, and efforts the Hoston Police Department put into this program, with the following purposes as stated in its directory:
''TO BRING TOGETHER GRADUATES OF THE HOUSTON CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY TO ENHANCE THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE FORCE AND TO ASSIST ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
TO SHARE THE VIEWS OF THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT WITH OTHER CITIZENS TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESOURCES.''
One of the highlights of the year for the Alumni is the ''Lynn Clooney Memorial Award'' presented to an officer of the year at the April General Meeting. Lynn Clooney was a founder of the Alumni and was the President when she died of cancer. The Board of Directors selects the officer from nominations from the various commands in the Houston Police Department. The Alumni also presents the award to the Outstanding Cadet at Houston Police Academy graduations.
Another highlight of the Alumni's year is the Comida Food Drive on the first two weekends in December. The Alumni, in co-sponsorship with the Houston Police Department, with the assistance and backing of the Fiesta Food Stores and PepsiCo, collects food and money on four days at thirteen Fiesta Stores. Food boxes are packed at the PepsiCo warehouse and distributed to the less fortunate. Since 1999, this project has collected enough money and food to provide food boxes for over 3,500 families for the holidays.
The Alumni Association is a member of the Texas Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and Region One. Region One is an organiztion of Alumni Associations in Southeast Texas and they meet at various locations within the Region One area on the second Saturday of each month. All Houston Alumni members are invited to attend; the Alumni is a active participant in the organiztion.
