Streetlights - More Crime

Posted in: SANA
Your streetlight/crime statements are not true in MANY MANY cases.

For example, nearby neighborhood homes and apts. all got streetlights - with NO crime reduction. In fact, AFTER the street light were put up - MORE and MORE kids and gangbangers started walking the streets at night, and crime WENT UP over there.

Your need to ''feel'' safe is an emotioal one, BUT it needs to be handled in a non-emotional way. There is a big difference between ''feeling'' safe and ''being'' safe.

It is apparent that you haven't even the slightest idea how a predator thinks. To them, street lights ''draw out the victims for their little walks'' - but it will be in the SHADOWS where you will get your predator education - That is where you will be grabbed from behind around the mouth - pulled behind a bush or into a ditch my friend.

A little common sense: Walk before dark or walk in a group of 4 or more. That simple!!

Once again, if you want streetlights on the corner at YOUR property - then order them and put them on YOUR LGE bill - but please leave the rest of us alone.

I agree!

We put motion detecter flood lights on back and side of my house an we have motion lights on front porch and back. We alos have a burglar alarm - we do not have to pay a monthly fee - it has a siren and my neigbors will come over if we are not home.

But you are right, I used to live in Portland where streets are lit up like a christmas tree every night - and the crime was just awful.

Emotional response

Streetlights bring people out into the streets where the light familiarizes all. Responsible home owners know that when you can see and meet those walking in the neighborhood problems are less likely. And since when should we have to feel that walking in groups before dark, at the mercy of the daylight is a way to live in this society. Combine streetlights with responsible block watchers and crime will stay away. If noone can see your back door when you are away, that 'my friend' is an invitation. Predators masquerade as the civilized any way, so you are right that having a light will probably not deter them but for the penny anney punk who is looking for a quick score...lights out is like a welcome sign.

calm down

It is apparent by reading all these postings that this neighborhood does not want street lights and that is fine. But we do not have to put someone down and be rude because someone else's opinion is not as ours is. Everyone has their rights. Telling people to walk in groups or stay in after dark and to pay for their own lights, come on people, can we not be a little bit more respectful to a neighbor who has apparently been violated in their own house. Mine has been broken in to also and I tell you, it is not a safe feeling. I also like street lights, but I am not going to force the neighborhood into getting them. If I want one, I will call and get one myself and have already looked into it. This website if just for expressing opinions, just take everyone's individual experiences into considration when posting comments.
