Planners
They can shove them planners up their a$$. Just another way to make money in my opinion.
I had posted a long time ago that I kept one of them planners, that was never wrote in during the whole school year. The next year they tried to get me to buy another. I refused and produced the empty book from the year before. Lets just say the principal was not very happy. (They had went and got the principal when I refused.) Back in my day, you went to school with a pencil and a comb.

Been there, Done that
Thank goodness my boys are outta school now. When one of my boys encountered a bully, he went to the teacher several times. When his request was ignored several times, I told him to clock the kid. He did and the bully left him alone after that. That was the only time my son got into trouble in grade school.

making detentions worthwhile?
Not sure about this, but I know the one and only time my kid got a detention. (her fault)..she did the detention, and got no sympathy from her parents. Sure she whined about it, and told me how unfair it all was, but she learned from it.
Things are different now than they were when we were in middle or high-school.
While I agree with you that different issues deserve different punishments, I would lean more toward suspension or expulsion for serious offenses, and just shut up and serve the detention when it's given for more minor infractions.
Again, your kid, your choice.

Something happened
last nite loosely relating to this subject. My oldest daughter came up to me last nite at about 10 to tell me she just realized that she forgot 2 assignments at school and they are both due today. She knows one of the teachers gives out detentions for missed assignments. I asked her what she felt I should do about this. She said,''Remember to pick me up after school?'' It made me laugh. The point is, she knew this was a consequence before this even happened, and she knew she was gonna have to face the music. Do I think a detention is a little harsh for forgetting a planner once. Well, yeah, I kinda do. I could see it on the second or third offense, but who among us hasn't forgotten something once?? MAybe you should have a conversation with the principal about this policy. However, you have to realize that if the teacher has stated this as a class rule, then she's gotta enforce it.
