GREAT IDEA!

There are draw-backs, to be sure. Insurance concerns, etc. There is NOT enough for our youth & families to do in Muscatine. The Y is a wonderful place for us to go, but there are limitations.
I have so many great memories of the skating rink we had. We see the commercials about the skating rinks in other towns and wish it could be done in our town. The skating rink we had was in a difficult location, repairs needed to be made. I think the owners just got tired. If new blood, with the support of our town, attempted to make this work...it could be awesome!
A safe place that families & kids can go to get exercise & do all of the other things suggested earlier, under one roof sounds like what our town needs!
Obesity is a problem facing the world today. Could a ''business owner'' ask for a grant or funding to help get something like this going? There were a lot of people against the ''money/time involvement'' that went into our Riverfront. They found the money & the support! It happened & has been a wonderful contribution to our town. There are negatives to any idea. I think this would be a positive move to help our kids, families and our community.

insurance

I saw that the skating rink in QC had a big sign in the entrance before you pay to get in that said something about them not being able to carry insurance for skaters injuries and to skate at your own risk. I know these are sue happy times and lawsuits probably still happen... just thought I'd mention that.

We hear a lot of wining about

there is nothing for kids to do. Kids are too fat. ''They'' need to do more for kids ad nauseum...
take a drive thru any city park on a nice day. How many kids do you see running, jumping, playing a pickup game of any kind of ball game, riding a bike and all the things kids used to do. How many moms and dads do you see pushing a little on on a swing or taking a walk with the kids? Not many. Now take a look at your favorite big box store or video rental place. How many kids with moms and dads in tow are buying or renting video games. I dare say the number at the video trough is much greater. I dont suggest that video games are evil or moms and dads are wrong to get them for kids. I do suggest that given todays society that a skating rink is not a great investment. If it were, someone with a buck or two to invest would turn a profit doing it. Yes we need to get kids back into the great outdoors and off their butts. It is not up to the city or county or federal govt to do it. It is up to you and me. We must take responsibility for what we have created. That is a generation of kids that think that waiting for popcorn to pop in the microwave is too slow. How often do we see folks standing in front of that thing saying I wish it would hurry up? I am guilty also. Slow down a bit and enjoy life.
