Childhood Memories

Posted in: Muscatine

Yeah, mom said she was a good dancer and they use to back up and watch her dance. Maybe you did dance with her.

I remember that. My Pa use to stop and lets us drink out of it! I took my boys there too, when they were younger. I remember the pigs that were all around when you got a drink.

Down Hershey Ave. out of town, past the Bandag plant, there was a spring on the bluff side of the road. A pipe was run under the road and the water ran into a stock tank beside a barn. People used to stop there to drink and fill water jugs to take home. They tested the water often. After it became polluted they closed it.

I do remember fishing in the slough.   We used to ride our bikes out to Lowe Run (way out Lucas)to play in the crick.  Those streams were always "cricks" to us ("creeks" was a sissy word).

By the way do you know that Lucas St. was called Lucas Grove Rd. out past where Houser intersects now?  Or maybe it was before that intersection?

Hiroad...the area out Lucas where you played actually in history was titled "Lyle Run". It became Lowe Run after slang went on for years pronouncing it wrong. And the crick you played in was my Grandpas! He lived in the old stone house up on the hill above the crick on the right of Lucas as you go west. (North Side). That crick was right on the curve and at the bottom of the hill. He owned both sides of the road in my youth and those clay hills just before the crick was our "mountain" we climbed when visiting gramma and grandpa on Sundays. I wonder if I ever saw you in the crick. That's where we seigned for minnows; as did alot of people.

The family folklore always related that Indians helped build that stone house. Can't verify any of that. Ever see my dad and his brothers logging out there and sawing timber just into the drive along the creek bank? I loved the smell of the wood they sawed.

Grandpa farmed that area and was a full time grave digger (by hand) at Greenwood Cemetary. Walked with a bad limp. Chewed Plug and Red Man combined....oh my God!

That spring water well was immediately below (down-gradient of) the newly established Halpin subdivision up on G-28. After many of the homes were put in (on septic tanks systems, of course), the water started showing signs of coliform bacteria and had to be posted. Coliform bacteria is from excrement waste. It was always defended that the coliform came from an increase in the stocks of animals growing around the area too. Odd what we do to ourselves.
