Childhood Memories

Posted in: Muscatine

So I was drinking poop water?! Oh well, can't taste no worse than PBR. heehee

That spring water well was immediately below (down-gradient of) the newly established Halpin subdivision up on G-28. After many of the homes were put in (on septic tanks systems, of course), the water started showing signs of coliform bacteria and had to be posted. Coliform bacteria is from excrement waste. It was always defended that the coliform came from an increase in the stocks of animals growing around the area too. Odd what we do to ourselves.

Why google when you have Big Brother?! He is like a walking encyclopedia. So, when people tell you to "google" it, say NO! I will "Bigbrother" it. Laughing

Well, I never really knew what the name was but it is where I played some baseball and it was fun.  Don't remember much about any arguments during or after games.  I don't think we even kept score at times.  It was like 1950 to 54 that I played there.

I do remember Eversmeyer's pond, particularly all the large goldfish that were in that pond.  Had some good times playing there.

As far as snowballs are concerned, I have some vivid memories because every time it snowed I ended up in a snowball fight, particularly after school at Franklin Elementary.  Snowball fights in the neighborhood were a different story.  We actually threw iceballs at times by getting the snow a little wet and hardened.  It was not unusual to place a small rock or a chunk of ice inside a snowball before throwing it and I was as guilty as everyone else.  I got globbered in the cheek one time which left a nasty gash in my face.  After that experience, I only threw real snowballs and usually tried to avoid snowball fights completely.

I only knew Lucas St by that name but I imagine some names have changed around here at various times over the years.  The streams around here were always know to me as "cricks" and when I lived in the southwest, I was often corrected to use the word "creeks" and I would always say that creeks were an indian tribe.  There was always a lot of fun chasing and seining minnows in those streams.
