I personally am supporting DeWayne Hopkins.  Rather than just saying “I know him on a different level”  (I have no idea what that means)  let me articulate a couple of the reasons I am supporting him.  I have known Hoppi for close to ten years now and know him to be a man of integrity, honesty and service to the community.  I don’t know if you are aware of all the community organizations that he has participated with and helped over the years but they are many.  He has worked on the board of the chamber of commerce and the Salvation Army.  Rather than listing all of his credentials let me direct you to his http://hoppiformayor.com/ website.  There you can learn all about him.  As I have stated before in other posts the office of Mayor here inMuscatine is simply an ambassador, a cheerleader and a lobbyist.  Knowing Hoppi the way I do I think he is perfect for this position because of his friendly and infectious personality.  He can bring people together and get things done.  Look at the success of the “Freezin for Food” campaign and the Hawkeye Hauler toy drive he has done every year for the past few years.  That is a collaboration of many entities that he has coordinated.  During his tenure with the radio station he brought the owners a consistent 30% profit every year and many accolades from the owners of the station.

The thing I like best about Hoppi is he is a regular guy just like most of us, who wants to serve the community he has lived in all his life.  I think he would be the best face as cheerleader, ambassador and lobbyist for our community.  He has been doing it unofficially for many years now.

I had a dealing with Roby back in 2001 that left a bad taste in my mouth.  I think she is out to promote herself instead of the community.  I could be wrong about that I really don’t know her that well.  Dawnese I have worked with on committees, mostly with the downtown and while she is a very pleasant and intelligent person I find her to be a brilliant idea person with very little follow through.  If I was running for a position of mayor or the counsel I would want to be at all the meetings to learn as much as I could so when I stepped in I would be up to speed.  I haven’t seen her at any of the council meetings lately anyway.

I would just like to ask you all to take a good look at Hopkins and check out his website and see if he seems like he would be a good candidate.  I think he is and I am supporting DeWayne “Hoppi” Hopkins for Mayor.

I don't think it matters much.  The problems we have are not going to be solved or not solved by the Mayor.

The only thing that probably does matter is the integrity and morality of the person elected.  Not because of potential misuse of power, but rather that scandal can throw a monkey wrench in the gears.

And I have no idea about the integrity or morality of any of those running.

Hiroad, et all,

I can assure you that Hoppi is a man of moral character and integrity.  If you would like, come to an Ice Cream Social being held at 19 Colony Drive on October 2 from 1-4 and meet the candidate himself.  Speak with him and see for yourself what kind of character he has.  Hope to see you there.

I'm with Hoppi.  My dad always taught me that you can learn everything you need to know about a person in 4 hours on a golf course.  I've had the pleasure of playing golf twice with the man (double the required 4 hours) and can tell you that I enjoyed his honesty, his sense of humor, and his clear insight into issues that we discussed.

I will try and make it to the event as I like ice cream even more than politics.

Opie...not sure how or why you would know what profit the radio station made at anytime, but getting rid of most live on-air hosts, switching to automation like the FM side, and farming the news out to a braodcast service in another state that continually gives news reports from all over eastern Iowa as opposed to our local area sure would cause me not to spend money there if I were in business. So they got rid of their biggest overhead (people), and switched to automation.

Likewise, there were always many more people involved in the coordination of the food and toy drives that occurred. But one only thinks of Hoppi because he was always in front of the microphone on the radio/commercials and seen in photos in the Journal. Easy to assume. And I have known him for over 30 years.

Also; for me, "a different level" means outside of politics. That's why I would support Roby.

Also, she is true government service/true government servant. Already proven. Already been responsible for government budgets, not some out of town corporate entity radio station owner. When I couple that all together, she is the best candidate.
