What is the downside to this idea?

I find msmal's posts insufferable. She/he/it argues any and every thing. It becomes quite tiring to read the posts and try to make some sense out of them.

What is so difficult about making sense out of a simple multiplication?   If you find that tiring, it's not wonder you're mislead by the right wing propaganda machine can.

The idea of illegals buying their way to citizenship is not an idea that I could embrace at any price, so the math is irrelevant to me.

Just to help you make sense out of what I posted, I didn't comment on buying citizenship, only the math.

Oh good grief.....would somebody show me where anyone questioned Mallodorks math?  BDI seems fixated on the math, when it's the content of the post that should be considered.

Stench,

All I questioned was the math.   The response was "Yes, she really is that stupid".
It seems that is referring to the comment on math.    If one was simply commenting on my alleged stupidity, one would have said "Yes she is really stupid".

This started off as a snide joking comment I made in another thread, but the more I think about it, why wouldn't this work?  What is the downside?  It is estimated there are 12 million illegal aliens in this country.  With our national debt skyrocketing, our Social Security in trouble why couldn't (or shouldn't) we pass a law that would allow illegal aliens to buy their citizenship.  If even only 10% would come forward and buy their citizenship we could raise over two billion dollars.  Illegal’s pay $2,000 to become naturalized citizens and they have all the rights afforded to us Americans.  The right to driver's license, right to vote, pay taxes, pay into Social Security and never have the fear of being deported.  If the government could sell this idea and incentivise this so even more illegals would come forward, then we could make even more money to put toward our national debt and Social Security.  We would have an amnesty period for them to come forward and apply for citizenship then after that period any one coming into this country illegally are in fact that, illegal.  Perhaps some of that money raised could go to beefing up our border security.

Instead of these illegals being a drain on our society they would now be part of the solution and paying their fair share.  If we could could get all 12 million to do this we could pay off our national debt.  Just because they are now legal won’t affect our unemployment rates or job market as they are here already doing that.  What is the down side here?

One downside is that $2,000 times 12 million is only $24 billion.   Only enough to pay for a month or two of our Mideast wars.

So, there wasn't any other comment other than the math?  Nothing about mideast wars?

You don't even lie very well.

Thank you mr hiraid. In the original posting, there was an announcement of a joke, at first. Then within, opinionated said, *to paraphrase.  why not. What might be the down side to this idea. You are astute in pointing out there are many actually. I myself would like to see so much more done to eradicate this massive drag on our economy, education, medical, welfare, jobs, and the list goes on and on. To those others who preferred to make relatively pointless issues out of this very serious and important thread, too bad the point was missed over a few petty notions perhaps just to redirect? Who cares actually, but as mr hiroad went the extra mile to point out, there are good ideas and bad ideas. I feel this whole, buy their way in, sounds good but just as george bush said as well as others, it's just too damn costly to keep shippen em over the border time and time again, only to have them return sooner or later along with more family and friends. A path to citizenship, guest workers etc. Nedl, you too are right in my eyes. They just seem to be finding the holes they need to get back across. What a lousy job being a border officer must be. Ron paul said we need guns on our border fences, but those fences need a better leader. To those overly worried about spelling anf grammmmer within many of these postings, yupper! I let one get past, that had I reread my reply, would have caught it. Embarrassed and red as a delicious apple, but no apology for those other little tripped over keys and folksy thangs we ofttimes drop here and there.  As for mallory, perhaps she has some sense of the things some don't regarding the actual question put forth. I saw it, but within that reply of her's, there was nothing else to comment upon but the math. Stoooooopidity? I really don't see how that made it into the threads in the first place. And perhaps even uncalled for, it were. The costs of war as part of the debt that the idea might help relieve? well to her I say yup, there's that too. But there is that which hiraod wrote too. He did indeed recall, that back in the day, these illegals were not so coddled and surely they would have had to work so much harder to return here. But to that, what would it cost. As I said, they would likely find the dough to buy into the good ole USA. That's why I suggested if feasible, 15,000 or more hell why not 50,000. Ya see the point now curious and liberal and whom ever else? It won't matter, they'll still get here as they always have, and risk it either way. To those who truly want to be here legally? Well that small number might well pay even if it cost 50,000.
