Poll: SCOTUS approval drops

Approval of the U.S. Supreme  Court has dropped to its second-lowest rating ever recorded.

Approval of the U.S. Supreme Court has dropped to its second-lowest rating  ever recorded, according to a new Gallup poll.

In fact, only 46 percent of respondents said they approved of the high court,  while 40 percent disapproved. The approval rating is a drop of 15 points since a  recent high of 61 percent in 2009. The lowest approval recorded by Gallup was in  2005, at 42 percent.

Meanwhile, trust in the Supreme Court has tied record lows for  the institution set in 1976. Only 63 percent of Americans trust the Supreme  Court a “great deal” or a “fair amount.” (Of those 37% who don't trust SCOTUS, 31 out of the 37% think they are too liberal - see below)

“The drop in Supreme Court approval in the latest poll could be a result of  the broader decline in Americans’ trust in government in general, rather than a  response to anything the court has done recently, because the court has been out  of session since early summer,” writes Gallup in its analysis of the poll.

There appears to be little partisan difference regarding approval for the  Supreme Court — Republicans, Democrats and independents approve of the Supreme  Court 50 percent, 46 percent and 44 percent, respectively.

A plurality of respondents — 42 percent — said the Supreme Court is “just  about right” from an ideological standpoint, while 31 percent think the court is  too liberal and 20 percent believe it’s too conservative. Smile

The Gallup poll was conducted Sept. 8-11, with a random sample of 1,017  adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage  points.

I think we should appreciate anyone's efforts to show trends in the voter's mindsets. but these polls with a tiny number of responses is just too unreliable. My dislike for any pole but for my flag has been noted. But give me a poll that looks at 100,000 and then we can talk about a real trend. For my family and many friends, if the super court leaves our constitutional  rights as written, and runs down anyone who violates them no matter how high on the ladder, then,    they have my complete approval. It's funny you bring this up too. We were having a little fireside chat when we went to n, carolina about the use of side measures to circumvent the 2nd amendment. Yous know, making it a crime not to have your guns locked up, or having to use some smart device to operate one. Or to serial code each bullet. Measures that by all accounts would make it too expensive to own and use a gun by the average person. One would think that the second amendment would make anyone a criminal that tries to do that to gun manufacturers and owners. Infringements is what they would be and anyone who puts up any legislation to that order should be removed from office or the seat they hold. That's the super court I want.

Whenever I see a rant about gun control, I have to ask what does the part of the second amendment that says "A well regulated militia" mean?

Perhaps if you only read the first part of the amendment Mal you would get the idea that it only applies to a "militia".  Fortunately in 2008 the Supreme Court read the entire amendment and held that it applies to all citizens of the United States.  Now here is the second amendment, please note the punctuation in it and how a reasonable person would understand that it applies to all people.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
