You must not have a child who has to walk up Miller's Hill (Fletcher Street).   It's a real death trap.   I hope they do repair the cemetery steps.  They served a purpose not so long ago.  And can serve the same purpose today.  I would guess that most of the vandalism comes from people who drive into the cemetery, not walk into it.   I drive on Miller's Hill.  Encountering a kid walking up or down when I come around the curve there is a real adrenalin rush.  Something needs to be done before someone is killed.

Yeah, slow down. Maybe we should close that off, too. Take Main or Houser.

I would be for repairing the steps. As a child I played there many times. My grandfather was a many-year employee of the cemetery; grave digger (by hand then), maintenance/mower, etc. I have a lot of memories from there and that time. I'm probably prejudiced in my opinion.

All the steps will need replacing, after we pay for the engineering study. We'll need to remove the steps that are there. Then the trees, about six feet on each side of the steps, will need to be cleared for construction and safety purposes. Maybe we should add lighting and a police call box to prevent rapes and muggings. How about benches for people to rest on? Let's put a roof on the whole thing while we're at it. How much do you want to spend? How many people will use the steps? Is there anything else more important in Muscatine? I'm sorry, but sometimes you are left with just your memories. You know where I'm coming from on that point.

You gave your opinion. I did not pick your opinion apart. I gave my opinion. You hammered mine. I didn't know you just wanted an argument.

I take it you're joking.  I already drive slowly on Miller's Hill.  I'm no fool.  Closing it would present a problem for those kids who have to walk to West Middle School from the neighborhood below the bluffs.  They would have to either walk over to Houser, or all the way around by way of 8th St.

I'm guessing that you are against the idea of having kids walk through "your" cemetery as it is going to change your routine and possibly even cause more work for you.  I do know that if I was buried there, and if I had any idea what was going on, I would welcome the idea that kids were in the neighborhood about 9 months out of the year.  From what I see, I see the city and state spending a lot of money "fixing" things that don't need fixing and not fixing things that do.  I'm not against spending money on restoring something that is actually historically significant or something that will benefit the kids and others.  How much money was spent on walking trails, on the clam god, etc.?  The steps would be a great excercise point.  I'm still for it.
