Anita Barrett, Houston

I am an attorney and have known Dr. Lydia Long for 15 years.

She is a great mother, an excellent member of her community, and very well educated.

She has undertaken many projects to restore the neighborhood she lives in and to bring some neat amenities to Abilene, such as a dog park, for everyone to enjoy.

I really can't say enough to do her justice. Dr. Long has a Ph.D in Criminal Justice and has taught classes in criminal justice at both the University of Houston and Abilene Christian University.

I am proud to recommend her for the position of justice of the peace for there is no person more qualified than she for this position.

While considering your vote, think of these things: A JP should be someone who is separate from law enforcement, not retired from it; one who is impartial and fair minded without other agendas co-mingled.

Dr. Long embodies these things and I urge you all to cast your vote in her favor for Taylor County justice of the peace.

Letter: A Long-awaited change

The good ol' boys are shaking in their boots! After all this is West Texas! There's a woman in the race for Justice of the Peace, a position which has always been reserved for "one of the guys."

For the first time we are offered the opportunity to vote for, not just a woman, but a highly qualified woman to fill this position. Lydia Long has a Ph.D in Criminal Justice and is knowledgeable of the laws and duties that she would be dealing with in this position.

She is running a good race, and that is where my vote will go, because of her qualifications, not just because she is a woman. Lydia is active in the community and will add a new, brilliant dimension to Taylor County government.

The citizens of Abilene have a great opportunity to elect a justice of the peace who will do you all proud. One who is qualified by training and education for the job and one who is scrupulously honest, ethical and fair-minded.

Lydia Long continues to amaze me with her boundless energy and drive, but you folks there have already been witness to that.

I don't know what prompted her civic involvement in Abilene except that she seems to have fallen in love with your town. Lucky you!

Full disclosure: she is my stepsister; I've known her since she was 5, so I am biased. In her favor!

Letter: Praise for Long

Dottie Mackey, Richardson

I have known Lydia Long for over 30 years and would like to tell you a little about her.

She is very civic minded, and is interested in making Abilene a safe, friendly city for all, natural inhabitants and tourists.

Her legal background is impressive and will be very helpful in the justice of the peace position.

She is a devoted wife, mother and a wonderful grandmother to her pride and joy, grandson Jim Grund.

She is passionate about every project she sets her mind to, and usually "gets what she wants."

I think everyone would be proud and lucky to have her in the position of justice of the peace for Taylor County.
