What New School to Support?

Differences

It's important to point out first that I don't think that anything can be done about the differences between the schools. There is simply no money.

Parking and traffic - The traffic at Ridgeview is a major issue. Each morning, you can find hundreds of cars trying to turn into one entrance/exit at the school while sometimes two cars are attempting to turn out north and southbound. The entrance/exit is barely large enough for two cars, let alone three. All the while they are crossing a sidewalk where kids are walking toward the school.

The parking at Central was a challenge in the fall with the buses. With tennis matches, band practice and freshman or JV games all being played at the same time, there was simply no place to park. Of course one could park on the west side of the building and walk all the way around. Now we simpy have to tolerate cars on both sides of Opportunity Way from the bus drivers. Several near miss collisions have already been reported.

Trash and appearance - There is a trash dumpster sitting on top of a grass parking island at Central. I assume that this is for the bus drivers. Not only is this a violation of the city ordinance, it's also an eyesore and is ruining green space. There are ''Bus Only'' signs made out out scrap plywood and spray paint at Central. There is torn and ripped caution tape all over a street sign. I could go on and on... please take a stroll through the east parking facilities at Central and you'll see what I mean.

Facilities - Can you count to seven? That's all you'll need to count the number of lanes at Tiger Stadium. I can think of no other high school track in the state with a seven lane track. North has TWO all weather tracks. There was one city commision member that spoke out about this glaring mistake that the school board was forcing down our throats. The school board has already indicated that the Pickerington Invitational meet would be held hence forth at North rather than Central. They claim it's due to the parking but do they really expect us to believe that a track meet will generate more cars than the Central - Reynoldsburg game?

The field at Tiger stadium is a joke. It's only a matter of time before a visiting team protests the condition to the point where the OHSA determines that the Tigers play all their games on the road. The conditions are so bad even though the freshman and junior high teams were not even allowed to play on it. They were forced to use the practice field. Tell me, Bruce, how many fields does North have for their athletic teams?

Again, what can be done? Likely nothing... no money to spend, and no desire on the part of the school board. But you asked...

Seriously?

Bruce,

Come on, this is a rhetorical question, right? I wish I still had my pilot?’s license so I could take you for a ride over both. I had even hoped to provide you with a Google satellite picture of both the North campus and the Central campus but the most current one for North show an empty construction site. Ask me to tell you the difference between day and night, black and white, east and west?….

Have you ever been in the bathrooms at the sports entertainment complex at North? How about the Central football pit or the outhouses at the baseball fields? I?’ll open the bidding on differences with the fact that North has this sports entertainment complex that rivals, no exceeds many Division II and III college facilities. I?’ll up the ante with practice facility upon practice facility for the student athletes and even practice band fields.

I?’ll see your Central auditorium and raise you a performing arts facility. I have stopped blaming Bruce. I have accepted and moved on. How about this? Let?’s run a special levy in just the Central district only for, oh let?’s say $10,000,000. We?’ll buy up all that vacant farmland between Central and Lockville Rd. and make all new sports facilities there. Let?’s buy that decrepit, run-down farm house and barn on Hill road adjacent to the school and put in performing arts facilities. Let?’s grow further south from the property and build and build?…

What?’s done is done. We have a $77,000,000 legacy to pay for now. Kind of like buying a big bad Hummer. All the ?“I?” factor but we can?’t afford the gas so we?’re still driving the Civic but it sure looks nice in the garage!
Make do

What all of you seem to over look in these discussions is what EVERY taxpayer in the district is paying for the North Facilities. Each of us that own a home has experienced a 30% increase in our property taxes over the last five years. The greatest share of the tax increase has been to pay the debt for the North Complex.

If my child has no chance to attend the North Facility and yet I must pay through my property taxes the increased amounts then that seems unfair to me and the half that has nothing and is paying for everything up North. Obviously the parents that have their children attending North can be smudge and preach to the rest about putting the mistake of North all behind us but everyone that owns a home still must come up with the money every six months to pay for the privileged in this community.

The calendar year 2005 taxes will be paid in 2006. This has been the smallest increase in the past five or six years. When my home values someday reach the same rate of increase as the property taxes on my home (based on 2000 value versus tax or 1.3% of market value) I may then consider voting for a school levy.

I will say with the over building by the builders that use the school district as part of their sales pitch have now cost us all property values. There appears to be a myth that good schools determine property values and that is a false myth. Pickerington has been a buyer's market for years. People looking at us and seeing good schools and low home prices. Only to find when they open their tax bill six months later they can't afford the taxes. With a poor economy and overbuilding our taxpayers are suffering and not likely to support additional tax levies anytime soon. I guess the message to the school is MAKE DO.
