ParentsÂ’ fear stall school drill

My response - a novel

Ok, so much for my novel on the background of yesterday. Someone will ask where I got the information that parents were threatening to vote against the levy if the drill was ran. My son?’s teacher read them an email from the front office sent to all teachers citing the complaint calls from parents and their threats. Simple as that. Someone in the front office had the courage to tell the truth. I can only hope they made this courageous decision because they face reality like my family does and apparently good people like Mr. Kemper and Chief Taylor do. So I now have to ask myself who would cave into a threat of voting against a levy. A school principal who is charged with the safety of our children and takes that charge seriously? Probably not. A Police Chief who is charged with the safety of our children and takes that charge seriously? Probably not. That leaves just one group of people who would capitulate to this threat. Politicians.

Yes, here I am again blaming the politicians in the PLSD for all the problems in the district. I envision a superintendent and several school board members nervously sitting in a room continually wringing their hands and looking at each other saying ?“Should we cancel??” ?“Shouldn?’t we??” ?“What if these 10 parents really vote against the levy and we lose by 10 votes??” ?“What if, what if, what if?….??”

Let me ask all you politicians this, what if your child was molested and murdered in her classroom and something like Mr. Kemper?’s drill could have saved her or even one single person? So trust me politicians, I can throw back just as many ?“What If?” questions to you as you probably threw at each other yesterday huddled in your little think tank.

Since you react so well to the threats of such a small number of people, let me remind you of something you failed to consider yesterday, you might face more severe consequences from what is probably a much larger group of parents/realists who now say, I will vote against the levy for your unconscionable decision yesterday.

My rationale is no more ludicrous that that of the callers yesterday. They threatened to compare apples to oranges and I am making the same comparison today. I am reminding you that this was a side you should have, but failed to consider yesterday. You thought that by getting Mr. Kemper to assume the blame for calling it off you would escape notice. You were wrong. You sullied the reputation of a man by involving him in your political platform.

The politicians have now made it abundantly clear that their priority is building schools at the expense of the safety of out children. I am sickened by this and I will never again vote for anything proposed by this school board or this superintendent. Remember ?“It?’s For the Kids?”? Yeah, right, it?’s really for the kids, isn?’t it?

My response - a novel

Mr. Thiede, I am more disappointed in you than anyone else. I read your column in the paper where you said you were the CEO of the largest business in this county. You have a great writer because I actually started to believe that you were, after all this time, willing to take the helm in this district and quit licking the boots of this pathetic school board. I thought you had turned the corner and were going to step up to the responsibilities of your job and lead. I was even wiling to follow a leader with my vote of confidence for the levy. You had ultimate authority on the decisions of yesterday and you failed us in your decision. You failed our children and you failed yourself and your profession. So to your writer I say save your energy. You can dress a pig in a tux but you can?’t make the smell go away.

I encourage all parents in this district who are as outraged as my family is at the cancellation of this important event yesterday to speak out. I don?’t want to see Central torn down for the same reason as the Amish school was demolished; not because of the memories invoked but because the blood could never be cleaned from the floors.

If you don?’t dare to speak out in writing in forums like this or the media, speak with your vote at the polls next week. Maybe, just maybe this time the politicians of the district will finally get the message that we are casting a vote of NO CONFIDENCE in them or their agenda.

And to answer a question you are all asking, I was up half the night writing this as a letter to the editor of the Dispatch but there is no way they would print anything as long as the stuff I write. It only got longer after I got the paper this morning and read the article above.

Response based on.....

Central Dad -

I'm with you that we need to have a drill - it's important to keep our kids safe. I also agree with what's been said in the paper that these kids have had fire drills anywhere from 10 - 13 years - complacency IS a problem.

As to the rest of your story - did you talk to Kemper, Thiede or any Board member or are you using telepathy? Or even Charlie Roduta for that matter? What you think & what actually occured may be different.

I don't see any difference between the parents you disparage that would have ''Voted NO'' & yourself that will ''Vote NO'' now. Both are short sighted decisions - both put our community and it's children behind an agenda that has absolutely nothing to do with Issue 8 - it's just a convenient way to stomp your feet.

If what you say in fact is true - which has not been established....once again Kemper or the District Administrator or the School Board are damned if they do & damned if they don't.

They lose votes either way according to you - how does that help our community?

This drill is postponed not cancelled. Maybe parents like the ones discussed should be allowed to let their kids ''opt out'' of a drill if they want & parents such as you & I can let our kids attend - Is that terrible?

If you're willing to let our schools further deteriorate (along with your property values) so you can further your stand of no-confidence in the school board you can do so. However, it is counter-productive to our schools and our community as a whole.

Why not go to the next school board meeting and tell the board the same thing you're telling the few of us on this msg board? I can almost guarantee you'll get press time from it and maybe you can make a bigger impact with the board vs voting no and complaining out here?

Just a thought.
