Mr. Dunlap seems to have eluded in the Sun Times article that the petition carriers may have ''misinformed'' residents in order to get signatures. I would like to set the record straight. I went door to door asking for signatures on the referendum ballot. Not once did I or the other person who went with me try to steer people into any positive or negative standpoint on the proposed economic agreement. We took a neutral stance and simply stated that we were soliciting signatures in order to put the economic agreement that City Council recently passed on the November ballot so ''WE'' the residents have the final say on such an important issue. In no way, shape, or form did we ''misinform'' the residents.
I am just a regular everyday citizen who has no political aspirations or have no crosses to burn with any particular Council man or woman. I just feel that if this agreement is something that is in the ''best interest'' of the City, then let the voters decide. I consider myself to be a highly educated person and have spent countless hours sorting through the facts/fiction and talking to parties on both sides of the fence. An agreement with the Township is not a bad thing---BUT...more people need to be involved in the process--including City Staff who are educated in these sort agreements. Mr. Hansley, the Director of Development needs to be directly involved in this process. Next, personal ego's need to be deflated and the Cities best interest needs to be taken to heart--especially when it comes to the tax revenue that will be generated. Cities need to grow and not become stagnant--thus we should not give up our annexation rights or at least not give up that right in 10 year chunks.
It seems to me that alot of valuable time is being wasted on something that has such a simple solution----''Compromise''. Think about it....how many times when we hear our kids fighting do we tell them to ''work it out''? What is the key to a sucessful marriage? TONS of compromise! Like a marriage, two entities (the City and Township) are becoming partners and compromises need to be made. The solution is so simple....lets quit the bickering and act like adults.
