Raising Money for the City

Posted in: PATA
Why not be consistent if we are going to go out of our way to raise money for the city?

Why aren't all of the cars ticketed every week that sit in front of elementary schools at basketball games in the FIRE LANE. Police ticket cars in the fire lane at the schools, but it is NOT consistent.

No question if a law is being broken here. Don't need a camera to argue cause or worry if a right turn on red is worth a $180 head ache.
Are you still beating your wife?

Everyone of us could be ticketed for something that is on the books at the city. Let?’s not go down that path just because the city is short of revenues. The council should concentrate on how to raise revenues from taxes not fines. Just reading the public comments from Chillicothe only shows the distrust created by these red light cameras. That trust is very hard to regain once it is gone. These cameras may alter the accident patterns but I doubt anyone in Chillicothe is any safer today than they were before the cameras.
Just my head against a wall.....

I guess if SAFETY is an issue (that's the issue sighted for red light cameras) - then why is it ok to sometimes park in a FIRE LANE?

Maybe one of our reporters can get a clarification from our city's finest to see when it's ok to park in a FIRE LANE & when it's not.

Maybe that same logic can be applied to the Red Light Cameras - sometimes it's ok to run them & sometimes it's not.....
Not everything is as it looks

I am not exactly where you are talking about when you say there is NO question about a law being broken. In most cases fire lanes are on private property and that would include the School Board Property. Our law enforcement only have authority on the public right of way. Having a vehicle parked on private property in the wrong place (like a fire lane) normally falls onto the School Board if that fire lane is on school property.

I am aware of people getting tickets as serious as speeding and reckless operation on private property and the citations were thrown out of court. If someone parks in your driveway and walks away it would be your responsibility to remove the car. Once removed what do you do with the vehicle? Probably the best strategy would be to tow it to the street and let the air out of the tires. Then the police would impound it.

In regard to running a red light: I am sure we all have run a red light in the strictest definition.

Clearly crossing the stop bar as the light turns red is running the light. More serious and more dangerous that most.

Unexpected black ice and you try to stop and the you slid into the intersection. Do you wait for the light to turn green again or clear the intersection?

You approach the light and you see the yellow light come on. Driving the speed limit you must then ''estimate'' your ability to stop before the stop bar in time to not go into the intersection. If you have a semi two car lengths from your rear bumper will you lock up your brakes to stop before the stop bar?

Let's say the yellow light timing is short enough for the speed limit that you make it to where your rear wheels happen to just be coming out of the intersection as the light turns red.

Exactly where is the exit point of the intersection?

Let's say the traffic at the intersection is moving normally and you proceed through and for what ever reason the traffic stops catching you in no man's land and the light turns red?

Should we get a ticket for all of those situations even though there may not be safety issues involved in running the light as it is defined?
