Pulling the chain

Apparently the previous poster (too wise) pulled the chain hard enough.

The section (Mayor and Council/Council) of the city's web site ''did'' have the appointment of Mr. Maxey filling the abandoned seat.

During the first reading of the council appointment, Mayor Hughes referred to a ''rag site''. At the time, I assumed he was referencing the PATA web site. Or more likely he was referring to the city web site? The Council member section of the city web site has been updated twice since 2/5/02...and as of today 2/25/02 no minutes from the Rules Committee that decided to pick Mr. Maxey for the abandoned seat? There are no minutes for council meetings posted since 1/15/02.

At the first reading (2/5/02), A citizen of Pickerington inquired how the city makes public notices. The question was asked, ?“Why does the city only make notice in the Lancaster Eagle Gazette with a circulation of about 250 in Pickerington? Can?’t the same notices be made in the local papers that reach a far greater number of residents??”

The Mayor mentioned the charter states that it must be posted in a daily paper, widely circulated in Fairfield County, and the city has a web site for information. He failed to mention it might be months after the fact before you see it on the city web site.

I think the Columbus Dispatch is widely circulated in Fairfield County.

The Facts

I think some factual information will go a long way in advancing the discussion re: public notices and newspaper circulation.

The circulation for the Dispatch in Fairfield County: 10,795 (daily); General circulation for the Disaptch is 247,722 (must cal for county-by-county breakdown)

The circulation for the Eagle-Gazette in Fairfield County: 15,638 (daily)

These numbers are available through the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), which sets the stadard for measurement in the print industry.

These numbers are current. The Dispatch's Fairfield County numbers are available by calling their advertising department.

The advertising rate for the Columbus Dispatch is $186.60 per column inch, and the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette charges only $22.59 per column inch.

So not only is the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette the newspaper of record for Fairfield County (the paper which the ORC mandates government entities advertise public meetings), it also has a higher daily circulation in the County than the Columbus Dispatch.

Because the local weeklies are distributed free of charge, with the exception of businesses that request mail delivery/subscription, there are no hard subscriber figures.
