I am sure our ''new'' council and mayor will look very closely at who fills that new position. With so many good people out there who support the direction of those just elected, the only issue should be trying to decide which of the good candidates is best.
In terms of Mr Swanson, while I hear he's a decent person, I hope that they look at his actions as they consider his fitness for that position. As noted earlier, Mr Swanson at least allowed Lee Gray and other pro-growth council members to carry and sign petitions for him on the last day before they were due. Prior to that he had expressed no interest in the mayors position, at least not officially or as far as I know.
I can't see how any reasonable person could look at that situation and not see that those two candidates were just being run to confuse voters. If Mr Swanson didn't see that, then in my opinion, he does not have the ''congnative ability'' to run this city. My personal opinion is that he knew exactly what was happening, and what the purpose was, and he went along with it. (again, just my opinion)
Probably sounds like I'm being real critical of Mr Swanson...not entirely true. If I owned a business that would benefit from having more residents in the area, I'd likely be arguing the other side of the growth issue because the direct benefit to me outweighs the costs to the schools...I could afford more taxes if my business prospers. I am only saying that, once Mr Swanson made the decision to run at the last minute, with Mr Gray carrying his petition, I think he staked out a position, and now I think he should live with it.
I'll trust Shaver, Hackworth, Riggs and Wisnieski to handle that...
