San Gabriel and Palomar Association

Posted in: San Gabriel

I recently learned that our Neighborhood Association is now defunct as a result of not having the yearly meeting.

This means that we are not represented with the city, we don't know what is going on in our neighborhood and the bank account for the association is now sitting dormant with approximately $1500. What has happened to the funds? What has happened to the history project started years ago? I believe most of the money was from the Palomar neighborhood.

Does anyone know about the account? Are there neighbors out there who would like to have an association again? Are there neighbors who have been here from the beginning willing to share their history and interest in the neighborhood?

Let's think about having representation and community again. We can keep the neighborhood thriving and safe when we build friendships!

The last meeting I attended the "President" was one big joke, I am so sorry that we joined Palomar with San Gabriel at least we tried.  I have nothing against Palomar except that is where the man is from, he has no business in that position as he has no interest in it.  I hope that we can start our neighborhood association again without Palomar and yes they can keep their share of the money.

Yes, it is disappointing. The man who was "president" believes that neighborhood associations are unconstitutional and had always protested their existence. This is why he wanted to become president--to make sure the association would fall apart.

Unfortunately, there are so many reasons to build alliances with neighbors and to have an association: To prevent crime, To build trust with other neighbors that can work together in times of crisis, To disseminate information from the city that may impact the quality of life in our neighborhoods, i. e., liquor licenses, development and zoning issues.

Until neighbors feel that they have a real say, and feel safe doing so, we may be out in the cold as far as representation goes.

Wish it could be otherwise.

Thank you for letting me know what's been going on from your perspective. You're not alone!

Well I just saw this post and do not know how old it is, but I have some information.  I was the treasurer many years back and was present when the 'new' president took office follwoing Anne's departure. I did not know the assn went defunct, but am not surprised.  The last President had his own ideas about how to operate the assn and wanted to do some different things with the money, some of which I agreed with and some which I did not (paying for meeting space is NOT a good use of money).  I stayed on for a while but then backed out as there was not enough support from residents, and he seemed to be able to garner support.  I tried, many times, to get the bank account switched over to the new officers and new treasurer.  The president had requested I grant him full access to the account, but I am doubtful that ever transpired; the reason I did not authorize it as the bylaws were not written as such. I am probably correct in saying (though I have not checked in the last year) that I am still in control of said money at the bank.  The last authorized withdraw I recall was for meeting room fees at Randolf Golf Complex and later a donation to the Food Bank. Let it be known that I have no ledgers or other past files - those should still be safe with Julia.  I am only recieving the bank statements (which I have not even opened - but I will do so now the next time one arrives and see how much is still in there).  I assure you that no one will be withdrawing from the account with my approval, unless they have access without my knowledge. The other treasurer was Julia Rosen and I suspect she is still on the account.  So, one of us is from SG and the other is Palomar which is fair representation. If someone wants to restart the assn they would probably need to contact Julia and maybe even Gerald - not sure how to go about that as I have not spoken to Julia in more than a year and Gerald in over 2 years.  Legally I am not on the board.  I might assist in restarting, but will not be serving again on another association. Submitted by Shanon on 5/10/11.
