Seriously..........

Why does your intersection seem to be so bad? We all have corners and stop signs, but is yours worse than others?
Is yours a short cut to somewhere? Why is the speeding and nonstopping worse at your corner? Is there an answer that you know of? I am asking for real.

it's bad because...

We're right off of 5th avenue (I live 1/2 a block away from Diane) and 23rd. I think the 5th avenue traffic is using 23rd to get to Central. That is the only explanation (if there is one) that I can think of. Who knows? But I agree with Diane, and have mentioned it before here, it is a TERRIBLE problem on this block.

ooppss...error

Oooppss, I made an error. It's Dartmouth and 24th where the problem is, not 23rd.
trying to figure it out...

Good question Bill. I've tried to figure this out too! So far, I've come up with a couple of different factors. I do agree with Amy, being a block in from 5th Ave. certainly makes things a little crazy! I would think that all the north/south streets in here are used as a shortcut from central to 5th or vice cersa. There seems to be a couple of different things going on:
- If you are driving on 5th Ave and enter into Kenwood (south direction), 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 28th streets do not have a stop sign at the intersection of Dartmouth. These north/south streets either have no stops, because of lights further south or the first block south of 5th has an east/west stop sign. 24th and 26th streets are the ONLY two streets that have a north/south stop sign 1 block in from 5th Ave (intersecting Dartmouth). Does this sound confusing? It sure does to me :) Summing it up, you can get off of 5th Ave on most Kenwood streets (south direction) and not reach a stop sign for 2 blocks or more (24th and 26th are the exceptions). Honestly, I think that this creates a confusing mess on my street because people are for the most part creatures of habit and unless you are paying close attention to the signage, you tend to miss this first stop sign at the intersection of 24th and Dartnmouth. I see it happen all the time!
- the landromat and store are right across the street (on 5th Ave)
-Dartmouth is a block south of 5th Ave. Drivers are travelling at speeds of 40mph+ on 5th and they are not always conditioned to slow down the moment they get into the neighborhood. (That's only my opinion, I'm not a traffic engineering expert but it sure does sound like on of the few logical explanations).
So again, I think there are a bunch of things happening at this intersection. The bottom line is that there are a significant amount of drivers that are not stopping here and a significant amount of kids that are routinely plaing outside on this block.
