Encouraged ?
I do not believe officers are encouraged to carry a AK 47 while off duty.
I have two friends that are retired police officers and they tell me to carry a side arm was a choice and there were rules on when not to carry.

Nedl, I have to ask
after learning a few facts about this story I'm stocked that you see no need to reflect upon preventitive measures? I'd think even the most hardened gun carring, NRA member, would see the countless victims of this event and look for ways to change things in the future. for sure the least of my concerns would be to protect the rights of a person to carry a AK-47, but I'm not a NRA member. This is their tactic. They held conventions right after and right down the road from some of the nation's worst school shootings, screaming my cold dead hand.
However, it was a sad story and I do Thank you for sharing it.
:-)

I think you are stuck on the wrong issue. It is reported that the weapon used was an AR-15 (not AK-47) which is similar to the assault rifles used by the Sheriffs Dept. The bigger question right now should be was it a Sheriffs Dept weapon and if so, why did he have it while off duty? I'd question any ''off duty'' carry policy of a police issue assault rifle.

Very well could be
a AK-15. Don't know. However, I respectfully disagree. In looking at everything that happened the misuse of a sheriff's rifle would be near the bottom of my list. We could so easily ask how does a person of this mentality get to be a sheriff? I'd assume they have some kind of test or something to weed out the bad apples. Someone missed something really big here and then gave him a AK-15 or 47 and a hand gun.
Do you think the people of this county feel safe today? Bet not..........
