Speeding on Residental Streets

Posted in: River Trails

A few years ago, there were two vehicles actually drag racing, back and forth, on Saranac.  I got the plate numbers, called the cops and the blocked the street with my truck.  Turns out one of the cars was stolen and niether of the drivers lived in the neighborhood.  It was bizarre.

Since90's, I do remember the man petitioning the speed bumps and he has since moved.  He was a fanatic against the speed bumps.  He did not have young kids, that was one of my questions to him and believe me - it set him off.  Ranting and Raving about how speed bumps ruin your car, etc.   I have kids.  Not young ones but I still have one in elementary.  I do not like the speed bumps.   I hate going over them.  But isn't it true that sometimes those of us who do not have little ones playing in the front yard anymore or and even those who have not had kids, we sometimes forget how easy it is for a child to get away and enter the street.  It happens all the time even with a parent standing right there.  Little ones like to run from us thinking it's a game.  They run after a balls,  they ride their bikes into the street.....they just do not think about cars.   Even though I dislike the speed bumps,   I think we should have them for the safety of the kids in our neighborhood.   If it helps to reduce speeding, I am for it.    I would like to see one at the corner of San Joaquin and Salado.  There are many who do not stop at that stop sign and there are a lot of young children playing right there!   Heck,  I would like to have one right in front of my house.   Where's the form!  I'll sign it!

TCB,

Normally you and I are dead on, but my girls grew up in Hurst where tere were no sidewalks...they played in the back yard!  I can honestly say there as never a time when they were in the front without their Daddy or myself.  The streets are for cars, the backyard for children, plain and simple.  I as a responsible driver should not be responsible for running a child over in the street, if I am traveling at a legal rate of speed whether 10 or 35 miles per hour. The responsibility lies with the parent. My girls stayed mad at us alot, but the fact remained, the backyard with the fence was for children at play, the street for cars.  we frequently loaded up their bikes or skates or battery operated "4-wheelers"  and took the to a public park or school to  ride, which is a pain in the neck, but responsible parenting usually is.  I know a few years ago,   dubose on tyne passed out flyer's implying a child had been run over and killed, not a good way to get your point across, in fact it was a fallacy and a really sh1#y way to get your point across.  My point is...."The Street is For CARS, not KIDS!!!" if driving the speed limit, I am not responsible for your kids!!! YOU ARE!!!

Hello Candy! I understand your point of view and I agree. However, kids do play outside in the front...maybe not yours but others most definitely do.  Anything that will help keep the children safe; whether it be speed bumps placed on the busy streets,  caution signs,  etc...I am for it.  Like I said,  I don't have little ones running around and no matter how safe we all want to be,  accidents happen and children do run in the street. God forbid any of us hit a child because I do not think we would be telling ourselves ..."But I was driving the speed limit" or "Why didn't you have your child playing in the backyard?". It is always best to be pro-active. This needs to be a kid-friendly neighborhood. It attracts young families with children due to the elementary school residing within the neighborhood.
